Independence Day festivities began at 9 a.m. Saturday following a number of other activities on Thursday and Friday as community members celebrated the United States' 250th birthday. The annual Fourth Fest booths featured a number of different food and art vendors, offering places people could get face paint, Indian tacos, lemonade, pancit and more. PARADE Despite the occasionally drizzly weather, neighbors lined the streets well ahead of noon to watch the annual parade.

Borough to add credit card processing fee for Finance Dept. payments

The Ketchikan Gateway Borough will begin charging residents a 2.5% credit card processing fee when using certain payment methods for transactions processed by the borough’s Finance Department in an attempt to save approximately $200,000. Deputy Finance Director Charlanne Thomas told the Daily News on Tuesday that fee only applies to Finance Department payments and will not be incurred at places like the airport or Gateway Recreation Center.

Borough to consider school buildings in August

An additional examination of shoring work on one of the Valley Park complex staircases is expected to be completed this week and could help Ketchikan Gateway Borough officials, including the Assembly, determine the future feasibility of allowing the island's two charter schools to operate in the building. The Valley Park building hosts both the Ketchikan Charter School and the Tongass School of Arts and Sciences.
