The Government Can Build Quality Housing for Everyone
By the time of the SAHT’s demise, it had built one-fifth of all homes in SA. However, once capital had lost interest in developing a local workforce, the state lost interest in developing houses for workers. The SAHT provides a fascinating case study on how the state can intervene in markets to create winners and losers. As inconceivable as it may seem today, private developers lost out while industrial capital and workers won.
WRITERS. TELL. ALL. (or mostly)
Meredith Davidson & Matthew Turbeville: Ruth, I am so excited to talk about your novel. I was hooked from the initial description, and I couldn’t stop reading and rereading as I went on. I find folklore, family legends, the histories we carry from our ancestors so intriguing. Why do you think these things are so important to people, and can you point to whether living with a legacy on our names, or superstition, or lore effects life for the better or worse?

Hey Book Dragons! I am having so much fun sharing all these reviews with you! I hope you enjoy reading them. 🙂 On the tenth day of 12 Reviews Of Xmas I would like to share a review of one of my favourite books this year! It is spooky, twisty and overall absorbing. When Fascism Almost Came to Australia
In 1931, dozens of meetings convened in packed town halls across the Mallee country, a region spanning Victoria’s Northwest and New South Wales’ Southwest. Most meeting attendees had never met a communist. Nevertheless, to euphoric applause, they passed motions demanding that “ALL COMMUNIST ACTIVITY MUST CEASE.” In the dust of such a night, a group of “concerned citizens” captured an unemployed supporter of leftist NSW Labor premier Jack Lang.

5 Upcoming Thrillers That You Need To Read Immediately
You knew a teenager like Charlie Crabtree. A dark imagination, a sinister smile–always on the outside of the group. Some part of you suspected he might be capable of doing something awful. Twenty-five years ago, Crabtree did just that, committing a murder so shocking that it’s attracted that strange kind of infamy that only exists on the darkest corners of the internet–and inspired more than one copycat. Paul Adams remembers the case all too well: Crabtree–and his victim–were Paul’s friends.
After a Copycat Murder, Reopening an Old Case and Old Wounds
Fiction July 7, 2020, 5:00 a.m. ET THE SHADOWS By Alex North For a group of boys in a bleak, unloved town in England, lucid dreaming has an obvious appeal. At 15, they have noticed that none of the adults around them seem particularly happy, and that their own lives are unlikely to be much different. Once they learn to become aware during a dream, the boys can then decide its course: “You can do anything you want, live any experience you want, make your dream world exactly how you want it to be.

Review by Luanne O, Reviewer Last updated on 11 Aug 2020 My Recommendation I listened to Alex North's previous book - The Whisper Man - and really enjoyed it. I was eager to listen to his newest - The Shadows. The covers of both titles feature handprints - with a bit more when you look closely. I liked the elongated shadows and the figures making their way into .....? The Shadows opens with a horrific crime in a small English village. Now, it's one you've read in the papers before. Or so I thought.

Review by Diane H, Reviewer Last updated on 20 Jul 2020 My Recommendation Twenty-five years ago, a boy is killed, another disappeared, and yet another is found guilty of murder. In the present, a teenager is killed in the same manner. Is it a copycat? Or has the boy who disappeared years ago returned from The Shadows? I hate to base a rating on an author’s prior book. However, The Whisper Man was so great, I had high expectations for The Shadows. Unfortunately, my expectations were not fulfilled.

Review by Jill N, Reviewer Last updated on 17 Jul 2020 My Recommendation Paul Adams hasn’t been home for 25 years. He had to come home, to help with his mother. Her care worker found her at the bottom of the stairs and called Paul to come to her in hospice. Paul hadn’t even known that his mother had a care worker, that she had been suffering from dementia. His mother had wanted to protect him, to keep him away from home, from the memories, from the danger.
How a Real-Life Attempted Murder Inspired Alex North’s Latest Thriller
Most ghost stories are more sad than scary, according to Alex North, acclaimed author of The Whisper Man. But who says they can’t be a bit of both? Especially when you were friends with the suspect... and the murderer. We spoke with North to talk about using true crime as inspiration, the discoveries he makes while writing, and his new release The Shadows. How did you come up with the idea that became The Shadows?

Alex North has crafted a second novel which is just as gripping as his first and even scarier. Australia’s New Digital Workhouses
In Australia, decades of public funding have led to the creation of a multibillion-dollar industry that produces no value, manufactures no products, and employs no labor. These late-capitalist enterprises instead profit by not employing labor. It’s the business of unemployment — and business is booming. Australia is witnessing the rise of the new digital workhouse.

What are you afraid of as adult? There are many things writers dream of – critical acclaim, perhaps, or an international bestseller – but for some of us, a nod from Stephen King will always be top of the wishlist. Well, C.J. Tudor has all three. “If you like my stuff, you’ll like this,” King said of her debut novel, The Chalk Man. And he’s right. The blend of small town childhood nostalgia and a gradually encroaching creep-factor is reminiscent of King at his finest.

"There is one movie that scares the hell out of me."
“There is one movie that scares the hell out of me.” For so much of the time, our lives progress in predictable ways. We have our routines and expectations, and we have people close to us – especially our families – whom we think we know. What could be more unnerving, then, than the sudden realisation that perhaps we don’t? Because all families have secrets. M. T.

Why do readers like to be frightened?
Why do readers like to be frightened? They say a good series detective needs a town, a city, a beat for them to walk. Rebus has Edinburgh, Morse has Oxford, and so on. But another way of looking at it might be that every place needs a detective.

What's the scariest thing that happened to Ruth Ware?
What’s the scariest thing that happened to Ruth Ware? Ruth Ware began her writing career with a series of young adult fantasy novels, before moving on to the gripping, uneasy psychological thrillers that have made her an international bestseller. Her ingenious plots frequently play out in closed and claustrophobic settings, against an escalating background sense of dread and paranoia, and her style has been compared to that of Agatha Christie.

Sarah Pinborough on Fear
Sarah Pinborough on Fear When I first started writing The Whisper Man, all I really knew was that it would be about fathers and sons and that I wanted it to be scary. The story emerged gradually as I wrote. I found myself in a similar situation when asked to guest edit Strand’s blog. I wanted to write about fear, but at first I didn’t know how, or what I might have to say on the subject. The solution turned out to be obvious: ask other people.
Marooned and in Peril: Five Crime Novels Set on Islands
By Edwin Hill August 22, 2019 They're remote. They're wind-swept. And they're deadly. Join Edwin Hill for a look at five crime novels set on dangerous islands. There’s something inherently interesting about a mystery set on an island. There are those that are set on small islands: ones that are remote, wind-swept, and hopefully facing a devastating storm. The threat of isolation without the possibility of outside assistance makes for great storytelling.
