The Wisconsin woman charged in the 2024 death of a Greene County man changed her plea Friday morning. Janel Nelson pleaded no contest to murder in the death of Michael Corrigan of Beavercreek. She was sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 18 years. Beavercreek Police were sent to the 1800 block of Maple Lane around 9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22. When they arrived, they found a person, later identified as Corrigan, with a fatal gunshot wound.

The holiday commemorates the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. Stateside, the holiday was first celebrated in California in 1863, eventually crossing into mainstream American culture by the 1980s. Today in the U.S., Cinco de Mayo is recognized as a time to celebrate Mexican-American culture.
