I started freelance writing during my time as a high school English teacher. My main areas of expertise were arts end entertainment. I covered big events like the Sundance Film Festival and San Diego Comic Con while writing about local music and film.

Over time I gravitated toward the food and dining beat which led me to my current position as the dining columnist for Salt Lake City Weekly. I am also a regular contributor to Static Media's Chowhound where I write about food and culture.

Fueled by historic growth, Vineyard’s Utah City is on the rise

In just over 15 years, the city of Vineyard has gone from a population of 139 to nearly 17,000. This significant growth has led to the development of Utah City, a multiuse space designed to help facilitate the city’s expansion while providing its residents with amenities like pickleball courts and waterfront parks near Utah Lake. Utah City stands on the ground previously occupied by the closed Geneva Steel Mill, and has seen its own significant expansion since its initial development in 2012.

It’s not serendipity that Kanab and the surrounding red rock vistas of Kane County are starting to summit the peak of Utah’s experience economy, but for a town of about 5,300 residents, the climb comes with much to consider. Known for decades as “Little Hollywood” thanks to the westerns filmed among its slot canyons and desert plateaus, the area has used that name recognition as a launching pad for something bigger.

Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animation studio that gave us “Princess Mononoke” and “My Neighbor Totoro,” holds a special place in the hearts of its fans. There is an experiential component to the films of studio co-founder Hayao Miyazaki that cannot be found anywhere else. Thanks to the efforts of a few Utah businesses—and my own nerdy sensibilities—a true Studio Ghibli experience is just a few reservations away.

How is social media changing news?

It creates a need for reporting to happen fast, which sometimes means inaccurate. Algorithms create content bottlenecks.
