Alexander Marion

Jessica Maxwell is the executive director of the Workers Center of Central New York, in Syracuse. Mark Spadafore is the President of the Greater Syracuse Labor Council. We were the city that welcomed people who escaped slavery and sought a better life.

Alexander Marion is the Syracuse city auditor. Pride month brings with it vibrant celebrations — brightly colored flags, exciting parades and impeccably costumed drag queens. It’s a time for queer people to embrace our identity and share that joy with our friends, allies and communities. But this year, Pride feels different. LGBTQ+ people are facing renewed discrimination amid efforts to erase our presence in this country.

When you think of homelessness, what do you see? A panhandler on a highway ramp? A line of people outside a shelter? A person sleeping on a bench? You should be thinking of children. According to the Housing and Homeless Coalition of Central New York, since 2021 homelessness has increased over 40%.
