5 Washington waterfront drives that aren't on the Pacific Coast
From saltwater bays and forested shorelines to river gorges and inland reservoirs, Washington has plenty of scenic drives away from the Pacific Coast. Here are five routes worth exploring, with stops for hikes, waterfront views and local attractions along the way. In places, U.S. 101 traces the shoreline of Hood Canal so closely that you can make out individual stones on its pebbled beaches.
Aveda Institute Wants You to Be a Hair Model
Let’s get one thing clear: you’re not a guinea pig. According to Mosk Dietrich, director at Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute, public clients who offer themselves up as practice for cosmetology students are not at the whim of a total newbie. And no one walks out with a choppy mess or green hair (unless that’s what they came for; both are, in truth, quite fashionable now). Since the school launched in Capitol Hill two decades ago, it has become the best hair deal in town.
Ten New Inventions Made in Seattle
“Welcome to the Future!” That’s how the Seattle World’s Fair program opened in 1962, directing fairgoers to the monorail, bubbleator, and spacearium exhibits, all focused on “the exciting realm just past the edge of tomorrow.” Seattle made good on its promise to create what’s next: Boeing boomed here, Microsoft ushered in the personal computing age, grunge redefined cool, then Amazon remade the world in its own e-commerce image. Seattle ingenuity wasn’t just about big, successful companies.
Off-the-Wall Ideas to Make Seattle Better
Sometimes you have to dream big. While great minds across the city are making concrete new inventions—like the 10 best we picked here—some of us are thinking in more abstract terms. We picked four pie-in-the-sky ideas for Seattle’s future and investigated what it would take to implement them. Possible? Maybe not today. But tomorrow is just around the corner. What if… Seattle Went Car-Free? Several European metropoles have tried it—in Oslo, Slovenia, and Italy’s historic centers.

The Appeal of Sleeping in a Fire Lookout
Moon Pass Lookouts near Wallace, Idaho, spruces up the classic forest cabin. Everything is a window at Moonpass Lookouts. All sides of the one-room, 14-foot-square cabin are glass; every ceiling panel see-through. The floor, 30 feet in the air, is the only solid surface, though the ground is visible when the trapdoor entrance is open. Every part of the indoor space steers the gaze outside. That makes sense, given the vacation rental is modeled after a utilitarian workspace, the fire lookout.
Why Seattle Loves Bar Trivia
Head in the Clouds Trivia hosts regular events at Hopvine Pub in Capitol Hill. I know how many episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation ever aired, and which element is second on the periodic table. I can recognize “One Night in Bangkok” from its opening riff and I know what SPF stands for. Mostly useless, sure. But also extremely helpful at bar trivia. Several times a month, my trivia team—all hail the Crusty Jugglers—gathers at a local bar, puts away our phones, and takes a test.

Seattle Center’s Laser Show Endures After 50 Years
The lights go off, the guitar chords of classic rock swell, and the audience reclines on the floor. The laser beams turn on, and it’s showtime at Pacific Science Center. Seattle’s laser shows have been underway for a half-century; our dome was one of the first locations to start the trend in the mid-1970s, following Los Angeles’ now-closed Laserium at Griffith Park.

Four Washington Rail-to-Trail Bike Paths
The Olympic Discovery Trail goes big on green. What’s long, straight, and cuts through the countryside? Once upon a time, it was railroad tracks. But as trains took a backseat to air travel in the twentieth century (thanks, Boeing), those stretches have increasingly become something else: bike trails. More than 25,000 miles of rail-to-trail conversions cross the country, at least a little in every state.

Seattle’s airports have direct flights to more than a hundred destinations, served by more than 30 airlines. The Perfect 4 Days in Seattle: How to See Seattle Like You Grew Up There
In 1962, Seattle imagined the future when it commissioned Minoru Yamasaki to build the iconic Space Needle for that year’s World’s Fair—and in the more than six decades since, as the incubator of Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon, and grunge, it has definitively owned innovation.
The Perfect 4 Days in Seattle: How to See Seattle Like You Grew Up There

Unburied: The Secrets of a Deadly Mount Baker Avalanche
Just after sunrise on a bluebird August day in 1986, a chunk of ice fell near the top of Mount Baker. The jagged block, bigger than a school bus, separated from an ice cliff 40 feet high and 200 feet long. It tumbled down the flank of Baker, gathering soft snow and more ice—a river of mountain. The sound was a guttural rip, a crack of thunder that didn’t end for 20 seconds.
How Science Is Rewriting Cruising in Antarctica
Most everyone who goes to Antarctica wants to cuddle a penguin. On this, his first trip to the continent, Dr. Ashley Olson is the only one in his group who actually gets to, sort of. At Brown Station on the Antarctic Peninsula, a few cherry-red wooden huts break up the landscape of glaciers. The structures are uninhabited, even though they’re among only a handful of buildings on the whole continent.

Cruise Destinations from Washington That Aren’t Alaska
If you want to go to Alaska, you can get to Alaska. Cruises depart from Seattle ports every summer heading toward the great northern land of lumberjack shows and gold-panning museums. But the 49th state isn’t the only destination from the region. Ships depart Seattle and other Pacific Northwest cities for ports of call both (very) near and surprisingly far afield.

Everything You Need to Know about Washington Marmots
An Olympic marmot mom and pup. Go ahead and envy the Washington marmot. The tubby, housecat-size rodents live in some of the prettiest parts of the state—alpine meadows, waterfall overlooks, urban parks—and they sleep for half the year. While on the East Coast the groundhog (the marmot’s close cousin) is burdened with the responsibility of playing meteorologist every February, Washington’s marmots are fuzzy, whistling free spirits. Looking for hikes where the marmots hang out?
How Charlotte Holtzclaw helps wonder take root at RBT
There’s a particular kind of teacher who doesn’t just teach lessons—they plant things. Ideas. Confidence. Curiosity. Possibility. At Anderson County Schools, that planting sometimes looks very literal in the classroom of Charlotte Holtzclaw. On any given day at Robert B. Turner Elementary School, students might be measuring pumpkins, studying life cycles through newly hatched chicks, planting seeds in the greenhouse, or learning how soybeans connect to the food on their dinner table.
The Seattle Athletes That Didn't Make the Top 25 List
It was a toss-up between Griffey and this guy. Choosing the greatest 25 Seattle athletes for our summer 2026 issue took a lot of discussion—and a little horse-trading. Not only were we ranking skill, accomplishment, and ineffable greatness, but our collection of editors and sports writers had to decide exactly who qualified (a lot of baseball and football players) and didn't (should mountain climbers count?). We questioned "greatest," "Seattle," and "athlete" status.
The Head of the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System Says It Can Save Lives
Dr. Natalia Ruppert on the Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysics Building at UW. About a year after Russian-born Natalia Ruppert arrived in Fairbanks, she was playing volleyball when the gymnasium around her began to shake. Everyone else knew what was going on—Alaska is the most seismologically active state in the country, after all—but it was new to the young PhD candidate. She’d left the dismantling Soviet Union to study earth science, so “it was actually kind of exciting,” she remembers.
Visibility Helps Readers Notice You. Trust Makes Them Buy

If you missed the earlier posts: Part I: Why Book Marketing Has No Easy Button Part II: Why Author Visibility Comes Before Sales Photo by Pauline Loroy on Unsplash Most readers don’t buy the first time they see a book or author. In the last series article, we talked about visibility. Readers need to notice you before anything else can happen. Now let’s talk about trust. Noticing someone and trusting them are two very different things.
The Best Pit Stops on Highway 2, from Everett to Wenatchee
US 2 passes through the Cascades for one of the state's most memorable drives. US Route 2 might be the state's most dynamic highway. It's almost as useful as cross–state Interstate 90, but it's scenic, like the North Cascades Highway. Traffic clogs the road on weekends through Sultan and Gold Bar, before the route loses cell coverage as it winds into the wilderness near Stevens Pass. It passes under towering Mount Index and curves along the rapids of the Skykomish River.
Hikes in the Cascades and Olympics to See Marmots
A hoary marmot hangs near Mount Rainier. Nothing shows off nature’s majesty like a marmot. In coats of thick fur, they recline on alpine rocks the way a Hollywood starlet drapes herself on a chaise longue. And while Washington’s endemic Olympic marmot may be endangered, there are thousands more marmots of other species to see across the state’s meadows and parks. Here’s where to spot the fuzzy fatties in all their glory. In the Olympic Mountains, marmots have a distinct look.

Maximalist Hotel Design Makes Travel More Colorful
In Woodinvile, the Somm rooms feature vibrant wallpaper. What if Alice’s fantastical Wonderland were reborn as a Marriott? It would look something like Woodinville’s new Somm Hotel, where the hallway between the lobby and bar is peppered with wooden mushroom statues the size of barstools. The weird continues; one seating area features bizarre sculptures, not far from a giant cutout of Sasquatch. He’s holding a wineglass.
How Tiny Tieton Became Mighty
Ed Marquand remembers his first visit to Tieton in numbers. The year: 2005. The distance: 15 miles by bicycle from the cabin retreat the Seattle book publisher had bought in Central Washington, out on a scenic pedal. And, most fatefully, the number of punctures in his bike tires, ripped open by goathead thorns as he rolled through the agricultural town: 18.
