Differences in Prokaryotic Community Composition Between Two Climatically Contrasting Years in an Arctic Fjord Ecosystem
1 Introduction The Arctic Ocean is one of the planet's harshest environments, characterised by extreme seasonality from polar night to 24 h of daylight and sea ice cover for large parts of the year (Meyer et al. 2017). At the same time, the Arctic is warming nearly four times faster than the global average (Rantanen et al. 2022), with the Barents Sea region, including the Svalbard archipelago, warming the fastest (Isaksen et al. 2022).

The oddest news RNZ covered in 2025
Source: Radio New Zealand 2024 set a high bar to beat when it came to things being generally weird, but 2025 comfortably rose to the occasion. That was perhaps a certainty set in motion late last year, when Americans took a look around and decided four more years of chaos was just what the world needed. Things were no less unpredictable at home either, with no shortage of strange news filed by RNZ’s own reporters in the past 12 months.
Bipartisan health subsidy bill adds income caps, anti-fraud measures
WASHINGTON - A bipartisan group of House lawmakers released text of legislation Friday aimed at avoiding the health care subsidy cliff by extending Affordable Care Act tax credits for two years while installing income caps and anti-fraud measures. Reps. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., Don Bacon, R-Neb., Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., and Jeff Hurd, R-Colo., see the measure as a viable compromise that includes Democrats' demand for a subsidy extension alongside protections sought by many Republicans.

Anita Chabria: What this formerly undocumented congressman understands about patriotism that Trump doesn’t
Rep. Robert Garcia's relatives, many of Peruvian decent, have been asking him recently if they need to carry identification with them, as federal agents seemingly round up brown people at will. His answer? Yes, but don't let fear quell resistance.
Tennessee Rep. Mark Green will resign after next budget vote
WASHINGTON - Tennessee Rep. Mark E. Green, the chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, announced Monday that he would resign from Congress later this year. Effects of stress on your body
Stress is a powerful thing. In small doses, it can motivate you to ace that presentation at work or land your dream job. However, if left unchecked for a long time, stress is anything but motivating. So what’s really going on when you’re stressed? And how can paying attention to your stress improve your health?
Update #12 - Press release: Dr Hilary Cass Final Report — Allison Bailey
I welcome the findings and recommendations in the Final Report of the Cass Review. https://cass.independent-review.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/CassReview_Final.pdf Like many other women and men, I was smeared as a transphobe for opposing the ideological and dangerous model of healthcare espoused by the network of LGBT+ charities aligned with Stonewall, including Gendered Intelligence, Mermaids, the LGBT Foundation and others.

Use Strategic Thinking to Create the Life You Want
SKIP TO CONTENT In times of crisis, many of us ponder existential questions about health, security, purpose, career, family, and legacy. However, more often than not, such contemplation is short-lived. The demands of everyday life — the here and now — can overwhelm us, leaving little time to think about the long term and what we are working toward. As a result, when faced with life decisions both big and small, we are left with nothing to guide us but emotion or intuition.
Update #11 - Yet Another Judgment Against Garden Court Chambers — Allison Bailey
On 3 November 2023, the Tribunal published its latest judgment in my case. This is the second costs judgment published since I won my case in August 2022. The original costs judgment ordered Garden Court to pay me £20,000 in costs as a consequence of their unreasonable conduct of the litigation, and despite them seeking hundreds of thousands of pounds in costs from me (which the Tribunal refused).
Update #10 - Garden Court Chambers ordered to pay my costs — Allison Bailey
We have received judgment from the hearing that took place last week to determine the costs applications made by Garden Court against me, and by me against Garden Court. The Tribunal found that I should pay none of Garden Court’s costs, but they must pay £20,000 of mine. This is a great relief: Garden Court weren’t able to say precisely how much they had wanted me to pay, but it was somewhere in the region of 40-50% of their total costs of £675,000.

iPhone X’s new facial recognition raises concerns | Cronkite News
PHOENIX – Even before the news reports about problems with Apple’s iPhone X – one reviewer for Forbes called it the worst iPhone ever – some experts had reservations about the facial recognition technology that is one of the phone’s marquee features. Arizona State University professor Sonia Bovio recently bought an iPhone 8, mainly for financial reasons – the iPhone X sells for nearly $1,000 – but also because it lacks the facial recognition feature of the newer model.
Arizona theater company hopes to combat lack of deaf actors in media
PHOENIX — This isn’t the first time Hollywood has been scrutinized for its lack of diversity and inclusiveness on screen. A recent study shows nearly all fictional characters with disabilities are portrayed by able-bodied actors. Movies like “Wonderstruck,” where hearing actress Julianne Moore plays a deaf character, show how the deaf community is underrepresented in mainstream media. However, it is not due to a lack of available deaf actors.
Arizona benefits as climate change alters wine production
COTTONWOOD – Some wine specialists foresee climate change eventually reducing the amount of wine produced. However, with every new harvesting season, winemakers find different ways to adapt to new weather challenges. As Earth’s climate changes, so is the way winemakers are harvesting their grapes. Well-known wine countries in Western Europe have seen the consequences of climate change on the winemaking industry for years now.
State senator should learn more about diabetes
As a Type 1 diabetic and an Iowan, I was pleased to see the June 29 Register editorial "Being diabetic is becoming unaffordable." For over a year now, I’ve been advocating for affordable insulin, which Type 1 diabetics must take to stay alive. I was interviewed by CBS Moneywatch and the Danish newspaper Berlingske. I wrote a previous letter to the editor of the Register, asserting that if people care about EpiPen prices, they should be upset about insulin prices, too.
Seawater pH Predicted for the Year 2100 Affects the Metabolic Response to Feeding in Copepodites of the Arctic Copepod Calanus glacialis
Widespread ocean acidification (OA) is transforming the chemistry of the global ocean, and the Arctic is recognised as a region where the earliest and strongest impacts of OA are expected. In the present study, metabolic effects of OA and its interaction with food availability was investigated in Calanus glacialis from the Kongsfjord, West Spitsbergen.
Dramatic insulin price increases also deserve outcry
During a recent segment on PBS NewsHour about the public outcry against Mylan’s dramatic price increase of EpiPens, the host asked the experts what it was about EpiPens that had captured the attention of the public and caused such outrage. Many stories have surfaced about dramatic pharmaceutical price increases; none of them have taken hold like this one.
Commentary: Community vitality
Commentary: Community vitality By Allison Bailey | 1 day ago Allison Bailey (Mark Hancock) A study produced by the National Trust for Historic Preservation using data from Seattle, Washington D.C. and San Francisco suggests that neighborhoods and districts with a variety of architecture, including historic buildings, are good predictors of community vitality. This same research also suggests that older buildings are especially popular with millennials. I’m not surprised.
