A Toledo defense attorney who was once on a shortlist to fill a common pleas judge vacancy died over the weekend at a central-city residence. Toledo police responded about 6:45 p.m. Saturday to a residence in the 3200 block of Parkwood Avenue for a safety check after a friend reported their concern for Kenneth W. Phillips, 61, of that address. When police entered the residence, they found Mr. Phillips, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Toledo police report.

Toledo police Chief George Kral would like to see all 40 members of the newest Toledo Police Academy class make it through the seven months of training to graduation. It’s never been done before, he told the cadets Friday morning, their first day of training. In every class, about four or five cadets decide they can’t do it, and never finish the training to become police officers. This time, Chief Kral wants to see that change. “Right now, I know what’s going through your head,” he told the cadets.

A 15-year-old boy left the Lucas County Youth Treatment Center less than two weeks ago before jumping into the cool water of Centennial Quarry on a hot summer’s day. That respite from July’s heat would end in his death. Pedro Salinas was placed at the Ohio Teaching Family Association in Swanton after his June 19 release. He had served a sentence after pleading guilty to murder in juvenile court after dropping a sandbag from an overpass onto a vehicle traveling on I-75.
