16 To The Rescue: Homer
BERWICK, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet an adult cat found as a stray about two months ago in Columbia County; now rescue workers are afraid he is getting overlooked because he isn't a kitten and adoptions in general are down in the summer. "I have had full conversations with him and no one can convince me he doesn't know what we're talking about, because he answers at the right time. If it's a subject he cares about, he gets more animated," said Will Hixson, Friends and Ferals.
Looking back at August 2018's flooding rains
PENNSYLVANIA, USA — For some of you, last weekend's flash flooding may be bringing back memories of a time not too long ago. This week is the 8th anniversary of the start of an incredibly wet August - what would later become several rounds of flash flooding leading to major damage all over Northeastern and Central PA all month long. Stormtracker 16 Meteorologist Ally Gallo takes a look back. This story continues below. More in Local weather It had already been a pretty rainy July that year.
16 To The Rescue: Amber and Jasper
DANVILLE, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet two beagles found as strays who should stay together in their forever home. "They obviously very much know each other and love each other; they don't need to go to a home together, but they do love to cuddle each other every day, so we're kind of hoping that they do," said Jennifer Springer, Pennsylvania SPCA - Danville Center. This story continues below.
16 To The Rescue: Betty
FORTY FORT, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet a 3-year-old Boxer named Betty. We introduced you to her sister, Wilma, a few weeks ago, but now it's Betty's turn to find her forever home. This story continues below.

Just how rare was last week's heat wave
PENNSYLVANIA, USA — In the Scranton area, it has only ever hit 100 degrees 9 times since record keeping began more than 100 years ago, and 6 of those 9 times were in July. The hottest temperature ever recorded in Scranton is 103 degrees. That happened on July, 9 1936. Somehow, we did not break any records in Scranton during last week's heat wave, but we were pretty close. It hit 98 degrees twice last week, on Thursday and Friday. Thursday's high did tie the previous record.

The hottest high temperature recorded for the 4th of July in the Scranton area is 99 degrees, that happened in 1911. This story continues below.

This story continues below. More in Pets But other animals, not so much.
A look back at Hurricane Agnes | 54 years later
PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Last week, the first named storm of this hurricane season formed and made landfall in Texas as Tropical Storm Arthur. It's been more than 50 years since Hurricane Agnes changed our area forever. The storm developed in mid-June and intensified to a named hurricane on June 18, 1972.

Looking back at the Wilkes-Barre Township tornado

He is two years old and was found as a stray in April, not far from where he is being fostered in Berwick.
Looking back at incredible images of wildfire smoke from June 2023
PENNSYLVANIA, USA — This week marks the third anniversary of wildfire smoke from Canada impacting us in Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania. Folks we spoke to that week called it apocalyptic, like a scene out of a horror movie. It was our top story on Newswatch 16 on the evening of Tuesday, June 6, 2023. As the day went on, what would have and should have been a clear, blue sky turned hazy.
16 To The Rescue: Bella
PLAINS, Plains Township — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet a senior cat who has been living at a shelter in Luzerne County for more than a year. "It's always bittersweet. It'll be first an empty cage, which will get filled, but it will not be Bella," said Ray Mancke, SPCA of Luzerne County. This story continues below.

A forever home," said Grace Benson, Laura's Hope Rescue. This story continues below.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — According to records kept by the National Weather Service, the average first 90-degree day of the year in the Scranton area is on June 10; in Williamsport, it's a bit earlier on June 2. So hitting 90 this week in the Scranton area would be about 3 weeks ahead of schedule. In Williamsport, the first 90-degree day of the year happened about two and a half months ahead of schedule, on April 16, and that was one of the earliest dates ever for it to hit 90 degrees in Williamsport.

She will be 2 soon, but she never really got the chance to get her puppy energy out.

The coldest overnight low this month happened on April 8.

It's construction season, you're going to see a lot of road work.

HONESDALE, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet a 5-year-old Great Dane named Motley. "I think if you like a big dog who acts like a small dog in your lap, he'd be perfect. Vietnam veteran in Schuylkill County gets new roof for free Original

I've never had anybody do anything for me like this," said Carson Woodward, Pottsville. That might be why Woodward thought it wasn't true when he got the call. The Air Force veteran has lived in his home in Pottsville for 38 years with his wife. Back in January, he found out he was getting a new roof for free.
Hitting 80 for the first time this year in northeastern Pennsylvania Original
PENNSYLVANIA, USA — We will likely hit 80 degrees this week in the WNEP Backyard, probably more than once. This would be the first time we hit 80 this year in northeastern Pennsylvania, the warmest air so far this spring. If we do reach 80, that wouldn't be too far off from a typical spring season. The average first 80-degree day of the year for the Scranton area is April 25, which ironically is also the date of the average last 32-degree day of the season.
16 To The Rescue: Tootsie
JESSUP, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet an 8-month-old kitten named Tootsie. "We named her Tootsie Roll because she likes to do 360s, she just rolls and rolls and rolls," said Cat Coordinator Katrina Coviello, Northeast PA Pet Fund and Rescue. But she is a cat, so of course, she wouldn't actually do the rolls for the camera. Tootsie is currently being fostered in Jessup through Northeast PA Pet Fund and Rescue after being found in a cat colony back in the fall.
Deja vu: Weather postpones RailRiders home opener Original
MOOSIC, Pa. — It feels like deja vu at PNC Field in Moosic. Opening Day for the RailRiders, originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, has been postponed to the next day because of sub-freezing wind chills. It's an all too familiar fate for RailRiders home openers, but that's April here in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Last year, opening day was scheduled for April 8, but the frozen field wasn't safe for players.
16 To The Rescue: Blossom
LEWISBURG, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet a 3-year-old cat who injured her leg a few months ago. The injury never properly healed and eventually needed surgery. "It took her a while to heal. It probably took her about I'd say four or five months to heal. She only has a slightly noticeable limp now, so she has a brand new leg, essentially," said Lauren Mack, The Scratching Post Cat Cafe. It's been a long road to recovery, but Blossom is fully healed and ready to be adopted.

16 To The Rescue: Ozzy
DALLAS, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet a pit bull/mix who turns 2 in a few weeks but has been bounced around in a shelter most of his life. "If I had the perfect scenario, I would say a single person that's very active with a fenced yard. We very rarely get that person. Right now, he lives 18 hours a day in a 4x6 kennel. I want better for him. He deserves better," said Laurie Finnegan, Blue Chip Farm Animal Refuge.
Coldest and snowiest St. Patrick's Day in decades Original
PENNSYLVANIA, USA — It's the coldest St. Patrick's Day we've experienced in more than 20 years and the snowiest we've seen in more than 30. We recorded 0.6" of snow in the WNEP Backyard on Tuesday morning, which is the most snow we've measured on St. Patrick's Day since 1993. That year, an inch and a half of snow fell on March 17, but there was still nearly a foot of snow on the ground from the blizzard just a few days earlier.
Pennsylvania's snowy week in history Original
PENNSYLVANIA, USA — There's something about March snowstorms in Pennsylvania. The anniversaries of three storms specifically are all within a few days of each other, and all three are some of the biggest storms to ever hit our area. The Blizzard of 1993 was and still is referred to as the Storm of the Century. The storm formed on March 12, and by the next day, on March 13, the WNEP Backyard recorded just under 19 inches of snow.
16 To The Rescue: Chai
HONESDALE, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet a young, easygoing cat who should be a pretty easy place, but is still getting overlooked. "She really, actually hasn't had much interest, not many people looking at her, so we thought we'd give her a little help today," said Linda Gambone, from the Dessin Animal Shelter. Rescue workers at Dessin Animal Shelter near Honesdale think this feature is all Chai needs to find the perfect forever home. Chai is only about 3 years old.
16 To The Rescue: Catra
SCRANTON, Pa. — In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet a 3-year-old cat who has only been at the shelter for a month, but rescue workers want to see her get adopted fast. "Catra is looking for her third and hopefully forever home in three years. It's through no fault of her own, she's a very sweet cat, she is just terrified of other animals," said Katrina Organ, St. Cats and Dogs of Nay Aug Zoo.
