Its first coal mine opened near Pittston before the Revolutionary War. The American oil boom started with the first oil well drilled in Titusville in 1859. Natural gas is plentiful in the Marcellus Shale. And the worst commercial nuclear accident was in 1979 at Three Mile Island.
