HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Harrisburg’s Zion Lutheran Church is still active and has been since the 1700s, but in 1839, politicking joined the preaching. The Whigs were one of the two major political parties at the time. It formed in opposition to President Andrew Jackson and the Jacksonian Democrats. And in 1839, the Whigs chose Harrisburg for its first-ever presidential nominating convention. “This building was brand new when the Whigs came here,” said Todd Pejack, church secretary.
