‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Is Back to Its Old Tricks
Here we are, back with another genre episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This week’s genre: fairy tale. Not what I want in my sci-fi show. At least this had (slightly) more action than the soap opera episode, but it also wasn’t as funny. I also found it weird that we went from a regular Star Trek episode to a genre episode. Next week will be the season finale… hopefully it’s a traditional science fiction episode.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Finally Delivers a Straightforward Episode Original
It seems weird that after seven episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds this season, we get to one that has no discernable genre. It’s not puppets, it’s not a horror movie, it’s not even that stupid soap opera. At least this one felt like a real Star Trek episode. Lots of plot and science… I better get into it! We open with Kirk on his way back to the USS Farragut, with a quick stop by the Enterprise, there for a check-up from Dr. M’Benga… but that’s not the only reason he stopped by.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Races Against the Clock Original
This week, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds turns into a 24-esque real-time action thriller, complete with a ticking clock that gives immediacy to the trope. Season four, episode six, “Off-Hour,” opens with Chapel’s voiceover counting down the minutes until the weekend begins. Viewers get a “Shipboard Chronometer” graphic to see how much time is left. We start with 48 minutes even.

The Puppet Episode of ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Is Finally Here
We finally got the Muppets episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds! Okay, technically they’re just puppets—that’s how they refer to themselves. But the Henson company made them, so they’re at least Muppet-adjacent. In episode five, “Level-Five Transporter Accident,” the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise is headed to Vulcan, where Spock plans to spend some time studying logic. However, there are pirates in the area, so the Enterprise slows down. When the episode opens, Spock is with Scotty.

The Crew Gets Tipsy and Things Get Weird on ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’
Last week on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, we had a horror tale; this week, we have a wacky, silly episode that runs like The Hangover. Apparently they’re hitting all the big genres this year. What will we get next week? A western? A cartoon? And when is that puppet episode coming? Season four, episode three, “Human Best Friend,” opens with voice-over from both Ortegas and Scotty, essentially talking about how much they dislike each other.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Boldly Goes Into Horror
Finally: a horror-themed episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. As a horror-loving girl, I was way excited for this episode. It was predictable, but I didn’t care. Horror! But first, we start with the set up. Kirk, La’An, and Spock are on their way back from a Future Federation Leaders retreat—which was a success. They detect a mysterious signal from an unknown region of space, so they go investigate. They come across the Griffin, a Starfleet ship that went missing without a trace nine years ago.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Journeys Back in Time
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season four opens back in time… and goes back even further. “Valles Marineris” opens with Pike (Anson Mount), La’An (Christina Chong), and Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) riding horses in a spacey, yet still Wild West-type area. When they are beamed back to the Enterprise, Spock (Ethan Peck) is waiting for them. He offers to take Pike’s saddle from him, but it is just a sly excuse to get a glimpse at La’An in her riding gear. She invites him back to her room instead.

My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock Takes Six Stabs at Suspense
Alfred Hitchcock was a supremely talented filmmaker. The Psycho director really was a sorcerer of sorts. His ability to craft tension by playing with expectations kept him several steps ahead of the audience. But there is more to the auteur’s legacy than suspense. In the documentary My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock, writer/director Mark Cousins explores six prevalent themes in Hitchcock’s work. The picture features a posthumous Hitchcock as its narrator.
The Final Girl Guide: 7 Iconic Examples + Tips on Playing Horror’s Heroic Archetype
For as long as masked maniacs have been mowing down horny teens onscreen, there has also been the final girl. One of horror’s most enduring, influential tropes, the evolution of this role has coincided with the progression of the genre as a whole. It’s a part with a deep history of characters who have become iconic. From common characteristics to how to crush the role, here’s everything you need to know about the final girl.
Demented, Diaboloical Longlegs Is Haunting
I decided to go into Longlegs blind. It wasn’t until about a month before the release that the press company put out a synopsis. I didn’t watch any trailers. I didn’t read the article in Fangoria. All I knew about it was that Maika Monroe plays a detective tracking a killer named Longlegs, played by Nicolas Cage. Monroe plays Lee Harker, a young FBI agent who seems to have some psychic powers.
Badass Maxxxine Factors Early ’80s Style
Maxxxine is the third in a trilogy created by director Ti West. X was the first, followed by Pearl. Maxxxine was probably my favorite of the three films. When we last saw Maxine Minx (Mia Goth), she was escaping what had been dubbed the Texas Porn Star Massacre by the press, killing the elderly Pearl by crushing her head as she drove away, the only survivor of a bloody weekend. Maxxxine is set about five years later, and in that time, Maxine has become a well-known porn star.
9 Reality TV Shows That Revolutionized Getting Real
Reality TV has been a fixture of the television landscape for at least 30 years, but the definition of the medium still varies wildly. There’s the wine-throwing, drama-focused variety; there are back-breaking competition series; and there are, true to the title, documentary-esque shows focused on real people living real lives. With all that noise, it can be tough to decide how to get started watching—or even signing up for!—reality TV.
Take A Peek Inside X-FILES Creator Chris Carter's Art Exhibition
As FANGORIA’s crazy, obsessive The X-Files fan, when I was offered the chance to check out an art exhibit with X-Files creator Chris Carter’s name attached to it, I didn’t hesitate to accept. I had no idea what to expect. When I walked into the art gallery in Downtown Los Angeles, it definitely wasn’t X-Filesy. The first piece I noticed was a pink Hello Kitty screen print with “My Crowning Achievement” written in gold leaf and hovering about the little cats.
Night Swim Is a Disappointing (And Shallow) Dip for Blumhouse Original
There’s a problem in the Blumhouse… erm, house. While their batting average is still respectable, the studio has begun to strain against audience tastes and expectations. Same-y films about a central group of characters where a weird, thinly obfuscated thing happens to them before a strong core shock… how many of their pictures can be summarized as such? It’s frustrating to see the studio behind greats like Get Out and M3GAN struggle at the box office and with critics.

The Exorcist: Believer Review: An Entertaining, Unnatural Sequel Original
The Exorcist: Believer is not so much a sequel to William Friedkin’s brilliant masterpiece. It is a new exorcism story that utilizes a well-known character from The Exorcist to tie it together. Leslie Odom Jr. stars as Victor Fleming, a photographer who was in Haiti when a detrimental earthquake struck. His wife, pregnant with their first child, was badly injured, and Victor is told they can only save one: his wife or his unborn daughter.

How One Of 2023's Best Horror Movies Came Together Despite The YouTube Director Stigma
Talk to Me is one of the best horror films of the year. It is quietly scary… and yet the directors are the biggest pair of goofballs I have ever met. Identical twins Danny and Michael Phillipou got their start with RackaRacka, their YouTube channel with almost seven million subscribers. Many of their videos are surprisingly silly, but some have a darkness that hints at where their first feature film would take them.
Talk To Me Review - A Simple, Scary Story Original
The excitement around Talk to Me is palpable. A new horror film from A24, the people who brought us Hereditary, The Witch, and Midsommar, is something to be excited about. And Talk to Me is certainly a film that deserves to live in that pantheon--it's one of the best horror films of the year. On the anniversary of her mother's untimely death, high schooler Mia (Sophie Wilde), her best friend, Jade (Alexandra Jensen), and Jade's little brother, Riley (Joe Bird), sneak out to a house party.
Insidious: The Red Door Review: Horror Sequel Does Nothing New Original
Insidious: The Red Door is set nine years after Insidious: Chapter 2. In that time, the kids have grown up, the Lamberts have gotten a divorce, and Josh’s mother, Lorraine, has died. We open on her funeral. Josh (Patrick Wilson) has a strained relationship with his kids, especially Dalton (Ty Simpkins), who starts art school at the beginning of the film. Dalton and Josh have no memory of their time in The Further, or even that anything mystical happened.
Cocaine Shark Review: A Terrible & Lazy B-Movie Original
With the success of Cocaine Bear in the theaters earlier this year, it was only a matter of time before other animals fell victim to narcotics and B-movie excess. A cocaine shark is the logical next step. After all, sharks have an ocean of B-movies to their name — from Sharknado to Shark Exorcist. And just before Cocaine Bear premiered, New Zealand police discovered over three tons of cocaine floating in the ocean. Cocaine shark memes soon followed, naturally.
The Walking Dead: Dead City Review - An Especially Average Zombie Series
Like its namesake monsters, The Walking Dead is the show that won’t die. It keeps going — it gets revived, renewed, resurrected. The show’s first reprieve, The Walking Dead: Dead City brings back two favorite characters, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and sends them to Manhattan. Set an indeterminate time after the end of The Walking Dead (I would guess a couple of years), Maggie goes looking for Negan to assist her on a dire task.
Robert Englund Reflects On A Life As Freddy Krueger, And The Evolution Of Nightmare On Elm Street Original
You may not know the name Robert Englund straight off, but his alter ego, Freddy Krueger, is known by millions. The burned child killer of nightmares--and slasher movie greatness--became something of a legend when he debuted in Wes Craven's Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. The role of Freddy Krueger was taken on by Robert Englund, who, up through this point in his career, had been a solidly working actor. He wasn't a superstar; he wasn't a name.
How to Act in a Horror Movie
Horror movies are often viewed as little more than lurid entertainment that exploit base human emotions for a quick profit. However, the ways that horror is represented onscreen both reflects and informs contemporaneous societal fears—or, to quote the king of horror , “We make up horrors to help us cope with the real ones.” If you’re a performer hoping to break into the world of monsters, madness, and murder, here’s everything you need to know about horror movie acting.
Evil Dead Rise Review: Bigger & Bloodier Original
The new Evil Dead Rise is nothing at all like its campy counterparts. But this isn’t a bad thing! Instead of the humor, we get lots of scares and lots of gore. It is a different face of Evil Dead, but one that I think does the title justice. After finding out she is unexpectedly pregnant, guitar tech Beth heads home to Los Angeles to visit her sister, Ellie, and her three kids: Bridget, Danny, and Kassie.
What Is Cabaret? How to Put on a Successful Show
Cabaret is a difficult thing to pin down, because there’s no single definition of the genre. While most performances are made up of songs punctuated by the performer telling stories about their life, a given show could involve standup comedy, spoken word, dance numbers, recitations, and variety performances. We spoke to a few cabaret performers and behind-the-scenes professionals about what to know if you want to put together a show of your own.
Renfield Review: Nic Cage Vampire Movie Is a Bloody Fun Time
There is no other way to say it: Renfield is a bloody fun time. One of the bloodiest, funniest movies of the year; it is an absolute joy. Set in the modern day, Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) has moved with his master, Dracula (Nicolas Cage), to New Orleans to help him recover from a particularly bad sunburn that left him charred to a crisp. Renfield’s duties include (but are not limited to) gathering people for Dracula to eat in order for him to heal.
A Fun Star Wars Holiday Special Doc Original
I am not a die-hard Star Wars fan; I am a casual Star Wars fan at best. I am, however, a huge fan of bad TV and movies, so when my husband, many years ago, told me about the Star Wars Holiday Special, I couldn’t wait to see it – purely for the “it’s so bad it’s good” aspect of it. I was not disappointed. My interest was immediately piqued when I heard that there was a documentary about the making of the Star Wars Holiday Special, which aired once – and only once – on November 17, 1978.
65 Movie Review - More Family Drama Than Wild Dinosaur Adventure Original
Based solely on the trailers, I went into 65 thinking it was going to be an epic time travel tale with dinosaurs as the main antagonists. What I ended up getting was a fairly traditional, if not hollow, adventure with a focus more on family than on giant space lizards, which is unfortunate. The movie starts 65 million years ago on Solaris, a planet similar to Earth. Though we see nothing more than the beach, the people look like humans.
Every Ghostface Killer From The Scream Movies, Ranked
By on March 9, 2023 at 1:34PM PST How do you rank the killers of the Scream franchise? It’s a tough task. Are they better killers for working alone or for coordinating with a partner? Do they get more points for the viciousness and creativity of each kill? Certainly, you have to consider the kill count. And, of course, there is the motive. When the killer finally removes their mask, who has the best rationale behind their murder spree?
Children Of The Corn Review - More Reimagining Than Remake Original
I will admit: I didn't have high hopes for the newest Children of the Corn film, an apparent remake of the 1984 classic horror film. Based on the Stephen King short story of the same name, the new film is directed by Kurt Wimmer (2015's Point Break). Despite the fact that it premiered at a Florida film festival in 2020, it wasn't picked up for release until 2023. But the new take on Children of the Corn turned out to be a surprisingly satisfying slasher.
