Beijing is more welcoming of visitors than ever before. With a population of around twenty million people, the traffic is dense and the crowds are colossal. However, public transportation is cheap: it costs two Yuan (about thirty U.S. cents) to travel anywhere on the metro; and the cabs are relatively inexpensive as well.
