The Question That Finally Made Me Stop Trying To Earn My Dad’s Love
I was onstage, mid-plié, when I saw him enter the auditorium and move toward the front. I didn't want to be confused with the dozen other 6-year-olds wearing white tights and black leotards, so I immediately straightened up and waved wildly to make sure he saw me. "Hi, Daddy!" I exclaimed — the low, awkward laughter from the audience catching me off guard. Suddenly, I felt too exposed. Also Read: As A Teen, My Relationship With My Dad Was A Nightmare.
Everyone joked that my pregnancy bed rest sounded like a dream. In reality, it was the hardest 3 months of my life. Original
In my 30s, my self-worth was still so connected to how much I could accomplish in a day that I named my business "do communications." Then one night, as I sat reading my 2-year-old daughter a bedtime story while 24 weeks pregnant, I started spotting and cramping. When I called my obstetrician, she advised me to meet her at the hospital as soon as possible.
I traveled to Mexico to see if I wanted to move there. After 5 weeks, I found an answer I didn't know I was looking for. Original
For months, I'd been looking forward to my five-week solo trip to Mexico, where I'd be housesitting in a beautiful oceanfront home in La Paz. I expected I'd have a relaxing stay, and I was especially eager to learn more about the area and its local culture to see if I might want to retire there someday. Right now, I'm not tied to staying in the US and am exploring options close by.

I thought I was exhausted by being a single, middle-aged parent. I learned sleep apnea was the culprit. Original
As a 48-year-old single mom working full-time and raising two teenagers in Seattle, one of America's most expensive cities, I was exhausted. I'd recently represented myself in a prolonged divorce and custody case, was struggling to make a living as a freelance communications consultant, and worried constantly about how to pay the bills. I desperately wanted to improve my circumstances, but I was just too tired. I felt overwhelmed, with no way out, when all I wanted to do was nap.

Add Yahoo on Google For years, I blamed my fatigue on age, stress, and single parenting. Then a sleep apnea diagnosis helped me understand why I never felt rested. Once I felt rested, I realized I'd been making decisions through the fog of chronic exhaustion.
After my kids left home, I put everything in storage and became a full-time house-sitter
Three years ago, I sat in my dark, 1,250-square-foot apartment cleaning out my inbox and missing my kids. As a single mom and new empty nester, I was still trying to figure out who I was separate from mom and caregiver. The quiet stillness that I dreamed of when my children were little now felt like sad emptiness. I tried filling the time by volunteering, joining a nature group, and signing up for a monthly open-mic night, but nothing stuck. I felt unmoored and unsure what came next.

I went from a 3-bedroom Seattle townhouse to traveling the West Coast with 2 suitcases. My stuff doesn't define me. Original
I spent months searching for the perfect couch for my new Seattle townhouse and debating which family photos would fill the collage picture frame I found online. I bought coordinated throw pillows, rattan barstools, and a whale-shaped butter dish that I loved.
I deeply regret the mom I was during my divorce. I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to my daughters. Original
As my daughters and I canvassed the neighborhood trick-or-treating, my 8-year-old dressed as a devil and her 5-year-old sister as a superhero, my frustration was growing. My youngest was refusing to say "thank you" as neighbors dropped handfuls of candy into her bucket, and I felt embarrassed. "Say 'thank you,' or Halloween is cancelled," I told her. She stared at me stubbornly while her sister's face dropped, and I instantly realized my mistake.

I left my dream job and moved to Texas for love. My marriage didn't last, and neither did living in the South. Original
As I drove south down the interstate from Seattle, towering evergreens lining the way on either side, I couldn't help but wonder if I'd made the right choice. I was on my way to join my new fiancé in San Antonio. We met at a concert in Seattle about a year before, and fell instantly in love. We danced most of the night, talked long after the lights went up, and planned our first date for the next afternoon. After almost a year of a long-distance romance, he proposed.
I have a background in child development, yet I still make mistakes. It took time to let go when my daughter went to college. Original
When my oldest daughter left for college, I felt blindsided — like I somehow prepared her to be independent without preparing myself. As the mom of two teenagers, I still had a high schooler at home, but other than rides to school or friends' houses, she didn't seem to need me very much anymore, either.
While other moms carried their kids' backpacks, I handed mine a wrench. It taught her independence.
I gave my kids independence early, even when it felt uncomfortable. • It helped my daughters grow into confident, capable young adults. It was Christmas morning, and my 9-year-old daughter was thrilled to open up our new backyard fire pit. She asked me if we could roast marshmallows and make S'mores that same night. "Sure," I responded. "If you can put the firepit together." I knew she could do it, and I was worn out after staying up late the night before wrapping gifts.

One piece of advice from a teacher helped me become the first in my family to graduate from college Original
By the time I was 15, I'd already been suspended, detained for trespassing, and arrested for shoplifting. Most adults dismissed me as a "problem child." Then I walked into Ms. C's classroom. Loading audio narration... Ms. C taught French and Drama at my junior high school in Vallejo, California. Her classroom was filled with her own private book collection, posters of French landmarks, and a hand-painted comedy-and-tragedy mask.
I was an empty nester who got laid off and felt alone. I started housesitting, and my whole outlook on aging changed. Original
One day, after my youngest daughter left home, I found myself walking around my favorite Seattle park feeling so lonely, invisible, and unmoored that I thought I might just disappear without anyone noticing. After COVID, a broken relationship, and decades of being everything everyone needed me to be, I'd been laid off from my job, my kids had moved on, and I felt stuck and unrecognizable to myself. "Is this it?" I wondered to myself. It wasn't just empty nest syndrome. I was clinically depressed.

My daughters didn't need a martyr. They needed a mom. Original
We were getting comfortable in our seats when the flight attendant started her safety speech. It was the first time I'd flown with my infant daughter, so I listened closer than usual, and one thing caught me by surprise. "Parents and caregivers, please remember to put your mask on first before helping your child." It made sense, but also surprised me. Without the warning, I probably would've done the opposite.

I thought I was above reality TV. Watching it helped me connect with my daughter in meaningful ways. Original
As a former English literature major, I really thought I was above reality TV. I don't watch a lot of content, and when I do, I'm more of a "Game of Thrones" person than a "Real Housewives" person. I love analyzing themes, motives, and emotional arcs, and I assumed the Bravo franchise had nothing to offer but mindless drama. For years, I had avoided the shows and would usually leave the room when my teenage daughter turned them on. Today, things have changed.

I've saved over $60,000 by living in people's houses as a traveling pet sitter Original
It was 2023, and I'd been feeling stuck for a while. I was working a soul-sucking job at a financial services company, living in a cramped, overpriced Seattle apartment, and feeling bereft as my kids grew up and left home. Staring at those same four walls every day while working remotely as a marketing writer, I found myself wondering, "Is this all there is to life — working, paying bills, and wondering how I would ever retire?" Then I got laid off and started to panic.

I had a fling with a neighbor. It was awkward when it ended, so I decided to move. Original
I was 900 miles from home, in a new state, at a new school, and moving into a new apartment when I ran into the guy who lived next door. Consumed with grief over a recent break-up and busy acclimating to all the new and rapid changes in my life, I hardly noticed him, assuming that the quiet, average-looking ginger wasn't my type.

Demand Apple and Google to Exclude Platform X from Their App Stores
As someone who fervently believes in rooting out hate, I cannot standby idle as social media platform X continues to provide a home for disturbingly harmful content. This is not a broad-spectrum internet censorship call, it is a direct appeal to expunge hate and violence from our daily digital experiences. Racism, misogyny and threats of physical harm have been consistently observable on X, an unacceptable reality that users like myself have to grapple with.
As a divorced mom of 2, sharing custody during the holidays is brutal. Not competing with my ex helped me enjoy it more.
The hardest part of divorce was being without my kids, especially during the holidays. I felt overwhelmed with pressure to compensate by making them extra special. Relaxing on what I thought the holidays were supposed to look like has allowed us to start new traditions.
I'm a single mom who suddenly became an empty nester. I decided to give up my home and travel full-time.
My 18-year-old daughter suddenly decided to move out and live with her father. I became an empty nester and struggled with the loneliness. I then took the opportunity to give up my home and travel full time. My youngest daughter was approaching her senior year in high school when she announced that she wanted to live with her dad. I was shocked. I'd been a single mom with primary custody for over a decade. Despite typical mother-daughter tension, we had a good relationship.
I'm a single mom with 2 kids in college. My divorce devastated me financially, so I feel guilty I can't help with their tuition.
I had to pay my way through college, so I looked forward to helping my daughters pay for school. My financially devastating divorce made it impossible to help them as much as I planned. I feel guilty that I can't help them, but I'm trying my best. Growing up, I didn't know anyone who worked in an office, had never heard of a marketing department, and couldn't tell you what "CEO" stood for if my life depended on it.

Winter on San Juan Island
How I rediscovered myself on San Juan Island, Washington. I was slogging through rainy commute traffic, halfway between Seattle and the Anacortes ferry terminal, when I got the call. “Our flight’s been canceled,” said Susan, whose San Juan Island home I was scheduled to occupy while she and her husband Ken were away. It was a sweet gig. Three weeks housesitting in the seaside town of Friday Harbor on San Juan Island — a premier Washington state tourist destination.
Moving Again
How I survived Seattle’s housing crisis as a single mom. “You’re moving again?” asked the woman I wished was a friend but was more like a frenemy. We were at the park after the farmer’s market watching our kids play, and the two moms I sat with had just shared their family’s summer vacation plans. One was headed to Hawaii, the other Spain.

Fifth National Climate Assessment, Chapter 11: Agriculture, Food Systems, and Rural Communities
Climate change—especially shifts in precipitation, air temperature, and soil moisture—is disrupting agricultural production and food systems, and is projected to reduce the availability and affordability of nutritious food. Impacts are distributed unevenly, with farmworkers, subsistence-based communities, and rural populations facing increasing risks. Opportunities that leverage agroecological approaches can limit emissions from agriculture and improve the resilience of rural communities.
Meaningful community collaboration in research
Meaningful community collaboration in research, as we know it today, started during the HIV/AIDS pandemic as a grassroots movement to gain an equal voice at the table of scientific discovery. Today, participatory health research, community advisory boards, and knowledge translation are common buzzwords that look attractive to grant reviewers and journal editors. However, community partnerships cannot be reduced to mere tokenism or committee meetings.

How do we make reading fun for children? - News of Orange: Opinion
As summer approaches, many of us take time away from our regular routines. For kids, that may translate into time away from reading daily. This break may slow down any child’s reading progress, and for some of our children, the break has a lasting negative impact. Conversely, studies show that students who read recreationally out-perform those who don’t. Students read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests. So how do we keep all of our children reading during break?
