Amir Khafagy is a New York City-based freelance journalist, essayist, performer and activist. His writing has been featured in Vice, Bloomberg, City Limits, Dame, Talk Poverty, Jacobin, In Theses Times and Shelterforce. Much of his work explores the intersections of Labor, Race, Class, Immigration,and Urban Development.

After a nearly two-month struggle, New York Immigration Coalition management agreed to voluntarily recognize its staff’s union late Thursday. “The New York Immigration Coalition has reached a voluntary recognition agreement with the union representing NYIC staff,” Chester Jesus Soria, a spokesperson for the NYIC, said in a statement. “A neutral third party will conduct a card check to determine majority support among the agreed bargaining unit.

Delivery workers have endured it all this past year: extreme heat, flooded streets, and toxic air. But now, the city can finally deliver some good news to them. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, alongside New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) Commissioner Samuel Levine, are set to release a new report Wednesday showing that the estimated 70,000 delivery workers earned a collective $104 million in additional tips.
