Rotary looks back at peacebuilding, plans for future

As the year draws to a close for the Rotary Club of China Lake, they look over their accomplishments and operations. They discussed the club’s recent peacebuilding efforts and their pending step-down at their weekly Wednesday luncheon at Charlie’s Pub and Grill. Last year’s Peace Baton was an important first step toward the Rotary Club’s peacebuilding activities.

Polio, not yet gone, far from forgotten

Polio may be on the verge of extinction, but its legacy of suffering remains within living memory. Thursday morning, the Rotary Club of Indian Wells Valley spoke with Rotarian Jim Lewis, a polio survivor, at the California Welcome Center. Lewis shared stories of his experience with polio as well as his efforts in combating it. The polio virus has been around for thousands of years, estimated to kill or paralyze over half a million people every year in the first half of the 20th century.

Rotary bowls for ShelterBox, donations sabotaging competitors

Last week's Bowling for Boxes event saw members and guests of the Rotary Club of China Lake at the Sierra Lanes Bowling alley. Nine lanes were rented for nine teams of bowlers to compete against each other while raising money for the charity ShelterBox. A set of cards represented the available handicaps. These were available for purchase and played upon other players, requiring them to bowl a frame with the "granny throw," or using their off-hand, or only taking a single step.
