AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Greg Abbott announced on Thursday that former State Sen. Don Huffines will fill the role set to be vacated by acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock at the end of July. The appointment comes as the office is overseeing the rollout of the state's first year of school vouchers, and just months ahead of an election in which voters will decide who will hold the role for a full term. Huffines, who formerly ran against Abbott in a 2022 primary, will take over the office on Aug. 1.
