1 Introduction Peatlands are globally-important ecosystems and carbon (C) stores. Through the Holocene, they have accumulated more than 600 Gt C (Dargie et al., 2017; Page et al., 2011; Yu et al., 2010) and have had a net cooling effect on climate (Frolking et al., 2006). The build up of peat in these wetlands is due to waterlogging, which prevents the rapid decay of organic matter (Page & Baird, 2016).
