Former Jaguar lived an exemplary life
Back in 1992, the Jefferson Jaguars were beginning to go on a run that wasn’t and hasn’t been equaled since the Eveleth teams of the mid 1940s. They were loaded with superstars and future Division 1 players like Mark Parrish, Mike Crowley, Dan Trebil, Nick Checco and many others. But like any good team, they also had guys who were quiet leaders – guys who went about their business out of the spotlight and who played integral roles in the success of the team.

Staying and playing
For Aaron Huglen, staying and playing with his Roseau High School team as a senior was a no-brainer. “I wanted to go back to try to get to the state tournament,” he said. “And there aren’t a lot of things more special than playing with the group of guys you’ve grown up with. So it was a pretty easy decision for me.” Huglen was one of five Minnesota high school players drafted in this year’s NHL Entry Draft. The Roseau native was chosen by the Buffalo Sabres in the fourth round, 102nd overall.

Officially Speaking: The cost of “amateur” hockey
For years, OS has been reporting that certain regulations and governing-body rules in amateur hockey have caused the sport to become much more expensive than necessary, and parents should investigate their respective organizations for full disclosure of all costs and expenditures assessed by their non-for-profit clubs.
Turning a negative into a positive
Team sports can be a great environment for kids to make friends, gain confidence and grow as young adults. It can also provide a community of friendship and support – which has been perfectly exhibited this year in Wayzata where two players on the varsity boys’ and girls’ hockey teams helped each other out with a similar problem. Mike North and Steph Garvis have a lot in common.

What kind of parents are we?
Some of you know, and many of you do not know, that I have a brother Michael, also known as “Bones.” Bones is an Army veteran who has lived (and served) on the street for the past 45 years. Homeless. This man has been a fixture on Rice Street in St. Paul. People are always proud to tell me they know him, or saw him, or bought him a sandwich. I appreciate this. Bones is an interesting guy. He has led an unconventional life. Quite an amazing life in many ways.

Larger than life
“Larger than life, with energy, with his giant biceps, giant Chesapeakes and giant trunks. He was like a fictional movie character,” Danny Hendrickson said of his father, Larry, who passed away on June 15 from complications of amyloidosis. The words passion, integrity, faith, love, innovator and commitment are consistent in every person’s words who had the pleasure of working with or knowing Larry.
A sinking feeling: No sight and no sound of Captain the hunting dog
After a couple of rough days last fall in which nothing went my way, a two-day hunting trip to southwest Minnesota with good friends Logan Hinners, Neal Hinners, Todd Jorgensen, their dogs Aspen and Skeet, and my 2-year-old Labrador, Captain, seemed the perfect remedy. Entering a small state wildlife management area at 9 a.m. on our first day, we made an initial swing through grass, willows and cattails with little more than excitement to show for it.

Looking to pull off upsets are Centennial, St. Michael-Albertville, Lakeville North and Hill-Murray. Minnetonka, in St. Paul for the first time since 2010, went 4-2-2 this season vs. teams in the Class AA state tournament. The Skippers were 2-1 vs.
Class A State Tournament Preview
The state’s top two Class A teams advanced to St. Paul, setting up a battle for the 2018 State Boys’ High School Hockey Championship. Top-ranked Hermantown leads the field, looking to make its ninth straight appearance in the state title game and win its third straight crown. The Hawks will be challenged by perennial contender Mahtomedi, 20-game winner Orono and central Minnesota power Alexandria.
Candidates announced for 2018 Reed Larson Award
In hockey, forwards and goaltenders tend to get the most attention with their gaudy offensive numbers and highlight-reel saves, respectively. Meanwhile, on the blue line are those who play tough defense, guard the front of the net and start the offensive rush up the ice. Let’s Play Hockey is proud to announce the 20 candidates for the 2018 Reed Larson Award, an annual award presented to the state’s top senior boys’ high school defenseman.
Big game, big difference
As the top-ranked Blake Bears prepare to face the third-ranked Edina Hornets in a Hockey Day Minnesota match-up this Saturday at 4 p.m., Blake Ice Arena will have all eyes on it as the game itself provides plenty of intrigue. The Bears are the defending Class A champion the last two years and have captured four of the last five state championships. They have not lost a game since Dec. 22, 2016, to Eden Prairie and have moved up to the Class AA without missing a beat.
Sandelin's Fourth Goal Caps Exciting Comeback Win for Hermantown
Down by two goals entering the third period of Friday’s Class A semifinal, Hermantown coach Bruce Plante remained supremely certain that his team could complete the comeback. “We weren’t nervous and we weren’t panicky,” Plante said after the game. “We were a little tired, but otherwise I knew the guys were going to respond.” Respond they did.
Five Unanswered Goals Power Grand Rapids Past Maple Grove
Trent Klatt would appreciate it if his team would refrain from trying to send him into cardiac arrest. “For some reason we like to play better when we are down a couple goals,” Klatt said on Thursday night.
Second Period Scoring Burst Lifts Moorhead Over Hill-Murray
It took two laser-like shots to help send Moorhead to the Class AA semifinals. Juniors Carter Randklev and Matt Herbranson burned a pair of wristers past Hill-Murray’s Jake Begley 38 seconds apart in the second period, giving the Spuds (23-3-3) a 3-1 lead that turned into a 4-2 victory over the Pioneers. “Hats off to Moorhead,” Hill-Murray head coach Bill Lechner said after the game. “When they had their opening they finished.
Zwack Leads Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake to First State Tourney Win
Since the Class A state tournament began seeding the top five teams in the field, the first and second-seeded teams have never lost in the quarterfinals. That all changed today. For the first time in seeding-era history, one of those top seeds fell in the first round. And, for possibly the first time in any tournament history, the good luck charm for the winning team was a sweater emblazoned with cat faces.
Blaine Starts Fast, Routs Roseau 7-1 in First AA Quarterfinal
Allowing Blaine to score early in a game is akin to an adult offering a child just one bite of a cupcake. Over time, with persistence and with the opponent worn down, the child will consume the entire pastry, and, likewise, the Bengals will cruise to victory. “When we score, our energy level and tempo has really increased,” Blaine head coach Steve Guider said after his Bengals thumped Roseau 7-1 in Thursday’s first Class AA quarterfinal at the Xcel Energy Center.
Is there an intrauterine influence on obesity? Evidence from parent-child associations in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) | Archives of Disease in Childhood
Background: It has been suggested that increasing obesity levels in young women lead to intrauterine environments that, in turn, stimulate increased obesity among their offspring, generating an intergenerational acceleration of obesity levels. If this mechanism is important, the association of maternal body mass index (BMI) with offspring BMI should be stronger than the association of paternal with offspring BMI.

State of Hockey Summer Training Programs Come to Close
Each Summer, Minnesota high school hockey teams train together for six to eight weeks in preparation for the coming season. Every summer training program (STP) has its own version of on- and off-ice training, but each has an element of both offered for its players. A typical program will skate two to three times per week with their high school coaching staff and also do dryland skill development and weight training to get their game ready for the season which is now just three months away.
GIRLS' CLASS AA FINAL: Eden Prairie Tops Maple Grove 3-2 in Overtime Thriller
It had been over 158 minutes since Eden Prairie’s Lauren Oberle scored her last goal, and while skating possibly her last career shift, broke the drought at the best time. Oberle, a senior, one-timed a pass from junior forward Naomi Rogge during a five-on-three power play to give the Eagles a 3-2 win in overtime in Saturday’s Class 2A final, ending Maple Grove’s impressive run in its first State Tournament appearance. “I just saw everyone pile on top of me,” Oberle said after the game.
