Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I have been hosting the radio show "Dr. Andy's Poetry and Technology Hour" on radio show KDVS since 2000.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, I originally mislearned to type on a typewriter, and I've been mistyping ever since.

How is social media changing news?

By radically democratizing journalism, social media has made each of us a potential micromedia mogul.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be curious, appropriately objective, and productive as an incidental and professional author.

What's your favorite social network?

As a journalist: Twitter. As a family man: Facebook.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, I helped to edit my high school yearbook.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My favorite piece for the Sacramento Bee told the story of facing men who were bullying my son with autism on Christmas Day.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read and write much more than you would reasonably feel to be warranted. Revise ruthlessly.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime via email at aojones@gmail.com and via Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/andyojones
