In Lyon and elsewhere, curatorial spotlights are on Oceania
It has been a monumental month for Aotearoa artists internationally. Across film festivals and major biennales, our artists are tracing histories of colonialism, asserting Indigenous self-determination and holding power to account, raising questions of transparency that land right on our own doorstep. In New York, a wave of Aotearoa and Pacific cinema arrived at the Pacific Island Film Festival, running from 17 to 20 September.
Artist residencies come in all shapes and sizes. How do you pick the one that suits you?
I'm writing from the fourth floor of a crumbling Art Deco apartment block in Kypseli, Athens. For the next three weeks I'm a writer in residence at Argo Arts, one of four international artists sharing a huge apartment in a neighbourhood that is bustling, eclectic and even more hipster than Wellington. The city feels familiar – it’s grungy and fuelled with creative energy.
The election is looming, so where are the arts?
In less than a month, we will be following those orange sandwich signs into our local community hall, church, school, or library. Ideally we will hand over our EasyVote cards, get a voting form in exchange, scurry over to a voting booth, mark our two ticks, fold the paper in half, scurry over to the ballot box, and slot it in. You must be enrolled by 25 October to participate in this thrilling activity of course. Later that night, every news media outlet will be updating us as the results come in.
Digital sovereignty means more than keeping data close to home
Angela Bishop, UK CEO at Zühlke, explains why resilience, portability and operational control are becoming just as important as location when building truly sovereign digital infrastructure. Digital sovereignty is often described in terms of geography – where data is stored, which cloud region it sits in or which country’s laws apply. But geography alone does not determine whether critical services continue when a supplier fails, a platform becomes unavailable or geopolitical conditions shift.
Cloud concentration is the next strategic risk for MSPs
Cloud concentration is the next strategic risk for MSPs By Angela Bishop, UK CEO, Zühlke Engineering teaches us that systems rarely fail overnight. Weakness builds quietly over time until changing conditions exposes it. Cloud is approaching a similar moment, not because the technology has failed, but because the market around it has become concentrated enough to create a new kind of risk. For years, Managed Service Providers (MSP) built their businesses around AWS, Azure and Google Cloud.
Inclusion in engineering needs the same rigour as other critical systems
Engineering and technology thrive on precision. When systems must perform under pressure, operate flawlessly at scale, and withstand every stress test thrown at them, the sector applies structured thinking, rigorous testing and clear accountability. Yet when it comes to increasing female representation in technical and engineering roles, that level of discipline often evaporates.
