1 INTRODUCTION Mixed-methods research (MMR) is an established approach to inquiry across a wide range of disciplines, and although a recent AMEE guide to MMR stated that ‘Interest in MMR is only recently emerging in HPE’,1 (p767) this was not our experience as individual researchers, journal editors and reviewers. In fact, when we conducted a quick scan of the literature, we found MMR articles in medical education (ME) dating back to the 1990s.

Sliding Doors: Pivotal Research Decisions and Their Influence on Exploring Sensitive Topics

This paper is the third in a series that qualitatively explores sensitive topics in health professions education. In Paper 1, MacLeod and colleagues [1] proposed strategies for generating rich data when participants are invited to share traumatic or emotionally fraught experiences. The authors suggest multiple methodological approaches for researching sensitive topics, advising researchers to design studies that attend to accessibility, respect and participants' and researchers' emotions.
