Gut microbiota restricts intestinal lipid uptake via modulation of bile phosphatidylcholine metabolism in mice
Abstract The gut microbiota influences host metabolism, but the mechanisms of lipid uptake from food remain mysterious. Here we used stable isotope-labelled tracers in gnotobiotic mouse models, which revealed that host uptake of dietary lipids depends on microbial colonization.

57 Tumor Morphology Concordance in Multifocal/Multicentric Triple- Negative and HER2+ Breast Cancers
Background There are a number of studies examining exceptional responders to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and the potential to eliminate breast surgery. Thus far, patients with multifocal/multicentric (MF/MC) tumors have been excluded from surgery omission studies and mastectomy is often recommended. Obligatory mastectomy may be overtreatment for patients who achieve pathological complete response (pCR) after NAC.

Sulfoquinovose is differently degraded by the mouse and human gut microbiota and not metabolized by the host
Abstract Sulfoquinovose (SQ) is a green-diet-derived sulfonated glucose and a selective substrate for few human gut bacteria. Complete anaerobic SQ degradation via interspecies metabolite transfer to sulfonate-respiring bacteria produces hydrogen sulfide, which has dose- and context-dependent health effects. Here, we studied potential SQ degradation by the mammalian host and the impact of SQ supplementation on human and murine gut microbiota diversity and metabolism.
Emergent Metabolic Niches for Marine Heterotrophs
Abstract Ocean microbial communities are made up of thousands of diverse taxa whose metabolic demands set the rates of both biomass production and degradation. Thus, these microscopic organisms play a critical role in ecosystem dynamics, global carbon cycling, and climate. While we have frameworks for relating phytoplankton diversity to rates of carbon fixation, our knowledge of how variations in heterotrophic microbial populations drive changes in carbon cycling is in its infancy.

A Systematic Review of Breast Implant-Associated Squamous Cell Carcinoma
1. Introduction Breast augmentation is a widely utilized cosmetic procedure, with approximately 193,000 procedures in the United States alone in 2020 [1]. Despite being a standard procedure, it has associated complications, ranging from common complications like bleeding, infection, seroma, and hematoma formation to more severe outcomes such as skin necrosis, Mondor disease, capsular contraction, and implant rupture [2,3,4,5,6,7].
Nutritional and host environments determine community ecology and keystone species in a synthetic gut bacterial community - Nature Communications
Abstract A challenging task to understand health and disease-related microbiome signatures is to move beyond descriptive community-level profiling towards disentangling microbial interaction networks. Using a synthetic gut bacterial community, we aimed to study the role of individual members in community assembly, identify putative keystone species and test their influence across different environments.

E. coli enhance colonization resistance against Salmonella Typhimurium by competing for galactitol, a context-dependent limiting carbon source
Highlights • E. coli mediates colonization resistance against Salmonella in a specific microbiota • E. coli can prevent Salmonella invasion by depleting galactitol • Lachnospiraceae consume free sugars and contribute to colonization resistance Summary The composition of intrinsic microbial communities determines if invading pathogens will find a suitable niche for colonization and cause infection or be eliminated. Here, we investigate how commensal E.

Neoadjuvant Endocrine Therapy in Clinical Practice
Review September 9, 2021 JAMA Oncol. Published online September 9, 2021. doi:10.1001/jamaoncol.2021.2132 Full Text Abstract Importance In clinical practice, neoadjuvant endocrine therapy (NET) is rarely used despite being an effective treatment modality able to downstage tumors and facilitate breast-conserving surgery.
Prognostic significance of residual nodal disease after neoadjuvant endocrine therapy for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer
Abstract Axillary management after NET has not been well studied and the significance of residual axillary node disease after NET remains uncertain. We used the National Cancer Data Base to examine the prognostic significance of residual nodal disease after NET. From 2010–2016, 4,496 patients received NET for cT1–3N0–1M0 hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer.
Association Between Time to Operation and Pathologic Stage in Ductal Carcinoma in Situ and Early-Stage Hormone Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer
Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, surgical delays have been common for patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and early-stage estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer, often in favor of neoadjuvant endocrine therapy (NET). To understand possible ramifications of these delays, we examined the association between time to operation and pathologic staging and overall survival (OS).
The Landmark Series: Neoadjuvant Endocrine Therapy for Breast Cancer
Abstract Patients with estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer generally do not have significant response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. In these patients, neoadjuvant endocrine therapy (NET) is an alternative for those who may benefit from tumor downsizing prior to surgery. This article reviews clinical trials that have defined the role of NET. Cumulatively, these trials demonstrate that NET is effective in downsizing ER-positive breast tumors.
Strategies to Optimize Axillary Surgery in Patients With Breast Cancer Receiving Neoadjuvant Endocrine Therapy
Introduction The increasing use of neoadjuvant systemic therapy has allowed surgeons to tailor local-regional treatment strategies in breast cancer, resulting in increased opportunities for breast conservation and decreased need for axillary lymph node dissection (ALND).1 In contrast to patients with HER2-positive or triple-negative disease, patients with hormone receptor (HR)-positive breast cancer experience low pathologic complete response (pCR) rates after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC),...

Breast Cancer Surgical Risk Reduction for Patients With Inherited Mutations in Moderate Penetrance Genes
Improvements in sequencing technology and multigene panel testing have helped identify a growing number of patients with mutations in moderate penetrance genes,1,2 defined as genes associated with a relative risk (RR) of breast cancer that is 2 to 5 times higher than population risk.1,3 These mutations increase primary breast cancer risk by a magnitude similar to the risk associated with atypical ductal or lobular hyperplasias,3 yet little data are available to define the magnitude of the...
