Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Professionally, I got my first full-time gig in college. I worked as a TV reporter at the ABC affiliate, KTKA-TV in Topeka, Kan.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I used one a lot growing up. At the time, it could be programmed to type sentences, so you wouldn't need whiteout.

How is social media changing news?

Vastly. It's a powerful research tool, and a great way to get news out there first. Yet, a lack of fact checking can make it a news hazard.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada. The small-town journalist that takes on her boss with wit and determination: my hero! Great movie.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Empowering. I teach people about topical events in their community, help inspire them and enrich their lives.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I don't know if I've seen one that's too funny, though I definitely did join the whole #winning bandwagon a couple years back.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I'm a skilled features & entertainment reporter. I love making people smile. But I'll admit, one of my big reporting interests is cold cases

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, AfterEffects, Sony EX3, Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, iTunes, QuickTime, iDVD and several others.

What's your favorite social network?

Facebook. The user friendly interface reaches millions of people. I like using Twitter for live events, but it has a less diverse audience.

Who do you wish followed you?

Eric Stonestreet. He's a K-State alum who shares a lot of Wildcat pride. As a journalist and actor, we share a lot of quippy chops.

Why did you become a journalist?

To connect people with the information -- especially stuff they don't know they need to know -- about their community.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, but I was editor of the Kansas State Collegian in Manhattan, Kan. I filled the job twice, among design, editing, radio and TV gigs.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Interviewing Charlie Sheen was an incredible accomplishment -- and I got to do it twice. The story won me many awards with the NPPA.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Showcase your social-media and web skills. Expect to work multiple positions. Never believe the naysayers, even if it is the boss.
