Emmy-award winning journalist Annette Lawless joined the KAKE News family as an anchor-reporter in August 2013.

Born in Wellington, Kansas, Annette got her start to journalism when she still had baby teeth. Often, she'd dazzle her friends with elaborate stories at the elementary school lunch table. Until one day, she gabbed too much and was shamefully penalized without recess for the whole day -- a true devastation for any 7-year-old. She's still a little bitter to this day.

What was your first job as a journalist?

Professionally, I got my first full-time gig in college. I worked as a TV reporter at the ABC affiliate, KTKA-TV in Topeka, Kan.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I used one a lot growing up. At the time, it could be programmed to type sentences, so you wouldn't need whiteout.

How is social media changing news?

Vastly. It's a powerful research tool, and a great way to get news out there first. Yet, a lack of fact checking can make it a news hazard.

I won an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Lower Great Lakes Chapter for a human interest report. The story was photographed, edited and reported by me. I turned the story within a four-hour time-frame.

I was recognized as a videojournalist Emmy nominee through the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Lower Great Lakes Chapter. Only three were selected.

I was nominated for an Emmy through the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Lower Great Lakes Chapter for Fox 8's sports show, Friday Night Touchdown. I am a sports photographer for the show.

I won an Edward. R. Murrow award for news stories on "The Little Sunshine Girl." The touching story of a little girl in need of a kidney and the unlikely person who came to help.
