Unfit to serve? Congressman isn't even real

Unfit to serve? Congressman isn't even real

politifact.com — Oh, our dear PolitiFact Georgia readers. Bless your hearts. That’s not a socially polite insult. We have sincere concerns after hearing from a reader, alarmed at the outlandish statements posted on Twitter by "Rep. Steve Smith" of Valdosta. "Please check out hate-filled (timeline) of @RepStevenSmith," the reader asked us. "How is a misogynist bigot of epic proportions allowed to serve? Dangerous." Our worry is not with Smith’s timeline. True, it is littered with (cough) liberal use of "boy" to demean those who try to engage and plenty of media baiting, along with the promised "partisan" thoughts of someone claiming Tea ...

Human-jellyfish headline misleading, but spawned by real bill

Human-jellyfish headline misleading, but spawned by real bill

politifact.com — Let’s be honest. The headline looked like it belonged in Florida. "Georgia lawmaker pushes bill banning creation of ‘glow in the dark’ human-jellyfish hybrids," it screamed over a photo of a contorted face adorned in fluorescent paint. Sure, back in 2010, the state Senate was roundly mocked for voting to oppose forcing microchips into people. (That measure died, maybe from embarrassment). So certainly Peach State lawmakers learned their lesson about drafting bills based on internet rumor and speculation. So PolitiFact Georgia set out to right this gross error, easy peasy. Except … Well, first the good news. The headline makes ...

DeKalb tied to another political corruption case

DeKalb tied to another political corruption case

Atlanta Journal-Constitution — The Atlanta Journal-Constitution An unnamed DeKalb County politician has been tied to yet another public corruption probe, this time accused of soliciting bribes in a federal case that stretches across three Southern states. The 51-count indictment against South Carolina businessmen Jonathon Pinson and Eric Robinson - alleging racketeering, bribery and theft - includes two counts of fraud for a kickback scheme involving "an elected official" in DeKalb. No one in DeKalb has been charged in the case. Tuesday, the six sitting county commissioners and interim CEO Lee May, who was a commissioner during the 2011 incidents, denied being that official, called a "councilman" in the indictment.

The best dog ever

The best dog ever

Orlando Sentinel — He was a survivor, devoted to his owner for 12 1/2 years. Now, there's just a hole in her heart. I lay on the floor next to my dog the entire night before I killed him. A veterinarian will tell you I had him put down. Technically, the vet injected the barbiturate overdose that stopped his heart. But as I spooned behind my beloved Brownie, rubbing his belly and murmuring to him, I knew it would be me and me alone who would decide when, how and where he would die. Rationally, I knew he had gone into kidney failure.
