Maine lawyer says immigration courts are rushing hearings to increase deportations

A Maine attorney is raising concerns about a new trend of immigration judges speeding through initial hearings, scheduling appearances on short notice, and issuing deportation orders to anyone who doesn't appear in court. Jenny Beverly, who is also a former immigration judge, said she's seeing this approach at a court in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, that handles cases for many Maine residents.

State says hundreds of immigrants could lose full MaineCare coverage under new federal restrictions

State health officials said 627 immigrants in Maine could lose full MaineCare coverage in the fall under new federal Medicaid eligibility restrictions. The State Department of Health and Human Services said in a bulletin last week that the restrictions go into effect on Oct. 1 and apply to people with a variety of immigration statuses, including refugees and asylees who have not received green cards. DHHS said those who lose full coverage will transition to Emergency Services MaineCare.

Maine announces next Office of New Americans director

The Maine Office of New Americans has announced a new director, who will lead efforts to integrate immigrants into the state's economy. Julia Trujillo Luengo has previously held positions at the Maine Community College System, the state Office of Multicultural Affairs, and the city of Portland. She will officially take the reins on July 30. The office launched in 2025, and is housed within the Governor's Office of Policy Innovation and the Future.
