After being shuttered for renovations since 2022, the owners and staff of Mi Tierra Taqueria y Mercado expected an enthusiastic response for their long-anticipated reopening on June 12. However, they had no idea just how many Monterey County residents would flock to the longtime Seaside favorite on opening day, forming a line that stretched out the door and into the parking lot. “We were very, very surprised by the grand opening,” says Mi Tierra General Manager Maria Esquivel.

What started as a traditional mixed-use development on Lighthouse and Hoffman avenues in Monterey, with five residential condominiums over ground-floor commercial space, has shifted from the conventional 12-month rental model to offer “extended stays” of 30 days or more. “Extended stay is appealing to anyone who cannot commit to one full-year lease, has sold their home and/or furnishings, or is on a shorter-term assignment,” Hideaway on Hoffman owner Anna Russell says.

Seaside Police report less citations and incidents for this year’s Fourth of July weekend.

With preventative campaigns and measures, such as closing the Home Depot parking lot in Seaside at dusk over the Fourth of July weekend, local law enforcement agencies including the Seaside Police Department report that this year’s holiday weekend was calmer than years past. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office reported 85 calls for service in unincorporated Monterey County.
