Freedom School Scholars March, Demand Fair Access to Public Education

About 40 Freedom School scholars, accompanied by about 15 adults, marched to the Montclair Board of Education building from Glenfield Middle School Wednesday morning, demanding equitable access to public education. “Scholars” are students from kindergarten through eighth grade who participate in “Freedom School” summer programs, which partner with the Children’s Defense Fund—a nonprofit that works to ensure children have access to health care and education.

Mayor, Newly Appointed Superintendent to Join Freedom School Scholars for March on Board of Education

Mayor Renee Baskerville and newly appointed Montclair Public Schools Superintendent Ruth B. Turner will join scholars from The Freedom School @ The Mark at a march on Wednesday morning, according to a flyer released by the organization. The march will begin at Glenfield Middle School and end at the Board of Education building, where a rally will take place, according to the flyer.

How Essex County Towns Could Be Impacted by 'Sanctuary Jurisdiction' Status

A number of Essex County towns were surprised to find themselves listed on a Trump Administration list of “sanctuary jurisdictions,” accused of endangering Americans and law enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security called Bloomfield, Montclair, East Orange, Newark, Maplewood and South Orange “lawless jurisdictions” that would be made “accountable for not respecting the rule of law.” Officials in many of these communities were taken aback by the Trump administration’s accusations.
