What was your first job as a journalist?
I wrote for an online magazine called Animefringe.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. I learned to type on one.
How is social media changing news?
It's making all news immediate, from awareness to instant vox pops; everyone has an opinion, even on things which don't directly affect them.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Georgia Mason, the Newsflesh books by Mira Grant/Seanan McGuire.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Curiosity, integrity, ethics, a passion for news or your niche. A willingness to lose yourself down rabbit holes of research.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I use the Apple ecosystem. Scrivener to write articles, Notion to run my freelance business. Substack/WordPress/Squarespace for blogging.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram; I love photography. For writing, Substack.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because I wanted to talk about the things I love, mainly anime and manga.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Find your niches and use pre-existing knowledge. Network constantly and remember to treat others as you want to be treated.
What's your favorite drink?
Outside of wine... Apple and rhubarb juice. Also yuzuchu and lemon chu hai.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
In a coffee shop, at my computer, or in Japan, at a coffee shop, at my computer. Failing that, try the local cinema.
