1 Introduction Large-scale modification of natural habitats is associated with loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services (Dirzo et al. 2014). But these are not the only consequences. Other impacts, such as an elevated risk of zoonotic infections, are often overlooked and remain poorly understood, particularly in biodiverse tropical ecosystems.
