Winter Sports Preview: Bomber girls basketball is young under new head coach Nick Tennessen
The Cannon Falls Bomber girls basketball team will be young again this year, but will have a clean start under new head coach Nick Tennessen after Joel Rustad resigned last spring. Tennessen spent the last few years helping coach the Bomber boys as his sons Isaiah and Abram played. This year, he will have the opportunity to coach his daughter, Livia, who returns as the Bombers’ leading scorer from last season and is one of their most experienced players despite being just a sophomore.
Fall Sports Preview: Cannon Falls boys soccer emphasizes discipline in everything
The Cannon Falls boys soccer team is looking to take the next step with a majority of their team back from last year. Those returners include four seniors – Brandon White, Isaac Rapp, Cameron Addington and Thomas Coyle – as well as quite a few juniors who have been with the program a while. “I think this team has shown a lot of improvement over where we were last season at the same time,” said head coach Scott Wildenberg. Wildenberg said that the focus this season is on discipline in three areas.
Fall Sports Preview: Rocket volleyball is a versatile team this year
There will be plenty of familiar faces this fall for Randolph Rocket volleyball, though they might be moving around the court from position to position. “You would think that would be the case, however they’re all so multi-faceted, they can play more than one position,” said head coach Chrissy Alexander about if the Rockets have hit the ground running with most of last year’s team back this fall.
Cannon Falls Volleyball Season Preview: New look offense for Cannon Falls volleyball
The Cannon Falls Bomber volleyball team graduated just three seniors from last season, but you would be hard pressed to find a more impactful three seniors who will leave large shoes to fill. All-State hitter Madi Burr is now at South Dakota State University playing Division I volleyball after an incredible career for the Bombers.
‘Pitching puzzle’ the key this spring for Bomber baseball
The Cannon Falls Bomber baseball team is coming off of a Class AA state tournament run, but it graduated seven seniors last spring, most of whom filled the starting lineup. Perhaps the hardest hit area for the Bombers is its pitching staff as four of those seven seniors threw significant innings. “That’s the biggest thing coming off of last year, is figuring out who all those pitchers are, because we graduated most of them,” said head coach Bucky Lindow. “So that’s our biggest task right away.
Bomber grapplers get plenty of pins, need to not give up the same
The Cannon Falls wrestling team will boast plenty of experience this season with five seniors seeing regular varsity matches and seven seniors total. They are Calvin Singewald, Jacob Bigalk, Lucas Freeberg, Jaeden Baird, Teigan Baird, David Boon and Mason Dolan.
Bomber boys basketball has skill, needs to build experience
The 2023-2024 Cannon Falls boys basketball team will be similar in some ways to last year’s squad but with some very important differences. Like last year, the offense will flow through senior point guard Dylan Banks and senior wing Aiden Johnson. The rest of the team will fill roles surrounding, supporting and playing off those two. However, unlike last year where every starter had previous varsity experience, this year’s team lacks much of that playing time at the varsity level.
Cannon Falls girls basketball aims to form new identity with young team
This year’s Cannon Falls girls basketball team will be very different from the past few years. Gone are the days of throwing the ball down low to a dominant post player like Taylor Johnson or someone with length and skill like Madi Burr. No, this year the Bombers are going to run, they’re going to gun, and judging by their first two games of the season, they’re going to score.
Lady Huskies repeat as undefeated NIC-10 bowling champions
It took a little longer than called for in the schedule of matches, but Harlem wound up repeating as NIC-10 champion of girls bowling for 2021-22. With four matches left to play, Harlem, Hononegah and Auburn were tied for first place with 5-0 records. Hononegah rolled past Auburn in the sixth game that signaled the beginning of the Lady Knights’ fall from contention. Still, the Harlem-Auburn meeting in the sixth match of the season had meaning. They were scheduled to play Jan.
Bomber girls soccer hopes to pick up where it left off
Cannon Falls girls soccer returns around a dozen players from last year’s team and is hoping to pick up where it left off after the 2022 season. “We started our year kind of how we ended (last year),” said head coach Erika Szramek. “So that is what’s making it look promising, the girls come in and are ready to go. The first two weeks have looked good.” Numbers are low for the girls’ program, which this year has just one team of 20 players from grades 7-12.
Scouting the Big Northern Conference: 2023 IHSA football season preview
2022 record: 11-2, 8-1 Coach: Jeff Boyer Worth noting: The 2021 state champs reached the semifinals last year and have dominated the BNC. They’ve had at least a share of the conference title since the league condensed from two divisions in 2016. Running backs Jacob Ross and Kye Aken plus lineman Jared Clauch all started for the state championship team. Ashton Henkel and Caden Considine should all see big minutes at running back as well.

FutureSeeds on cultivating grounded optimism
Most of us harbour worries about the future. In some universities in the US, over 70% of students have self described as suffering from eco-anxiety. How do we cope? Believing that politicians and scientists alone will solve the problem is a common strategy. Burying our heads in the sand is another. Having a kind of religious faith in the future is also a strategy.
