Computer and engineering students were given six days to complete one task: build something worthy. “We really wanted to put as few rules or procedures as we could in place,” said Scott Burton, the computer science department chair and director of the event. Hack Week participants were expected to form and register their teams by Feb. 4 and submit a video of their projects on YouTube by 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 10.

The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering along with the Department of ComputerInformation Technology will host their first-ever Hack Week. The kick-off to the 6-day project and competition began Feb. 4 at 11:30 a.m. as students met in the Science and Technology Center, room 375. March 18, 2020– Duval county high school students have the opportunity to snag some free internet hotspots to help get their school work done. The district launched the Free Hotspots for High School Students program this school year. This program provides free high-speed internet access to qualifying high school students who do not currently have reliable Internet access at home. Daytona Beach Police Step Up Patrols on Black Friday
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Daytona Beach police officers are stepping up patrols as Central Florida kicks off the holiday shopping season. The chief said officers are scattered throughout the city. Tim Stanford and his family are regular Black Friday shoppers, who were out shopping for good deal Friday. He said he not only took notice of the sales, but he noticed the police presence also right away. "I’ve seen a few more officers on the streets and at the storefronts," Stanford said.
Volusia Sheriff: Video Shows Murder Suspect Shot at Officers First
DELAND, Fla. — The Volusia County Sheriff's Office released the body camera video from an incident in DeLeon Springs Monday where an attempted murder suspect was shot by deputies and police officers. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the suspect is in ICU at the Halifax Hospital. The man the suspect is accused of shooting earlier this month is also there as well. Now we're seeing up close how the suspect ended up here. Dillon Parker was wanted on an active warrant for attempted murder, Chitwood said Monday.

Volusia Deputies Shut Down 17 Illegal Internet Cafes
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Seventeen illegal internet cafés have been shut down in Volusia County as part of a crackdown by the Sheriff's Office. "Think it's safe to say that we're at war with these establishments, and we're going to do everything we humanly can to shut them down and run them out of the county," Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. The Florida legislature banned internet cafés in 2013.
Teen accused of threatening to shoot Flagler student
FLAGLER COUNTY, Florida -- A 16-year-old high school student has bee arrested, accused of threatening to shoot another student, according to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office. Deputies say the incident happened Monday at Flagler Palm Coast High School. A school resource deputy was notified of the incident. No other details were immediately available.
Bethune-Cookman Interim President, Trustees Promise More Transparency
DAYTONA BEACH, Florida — The interim president of Bethune-Cookman University will remain on the job, the school announced Friday. The board of trustees wrapped up two days of meetings and met with student protesters concerned about the state of the university. FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. -- They became known as the "Soggy Bottom Brothers," lending a hand from one Hurricane Irma victim's home to the next. Four friends -- Scott Fox, Paul Chestnut, Eric Cooley and Russ Warner -- were inseparable as they helped their neighbors after hundreds suffered from flooding due to the storm. Unincorporated Flagler beaches use ‘Mobi-Mats’ to protect dunes
FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. -- The unincorporated beaches of Flagler County now have something in place that should keep people off the dunes -- they're called ‘Mobi-Mats.’ Homeowners in the area say they're a life-saver. Wednesday was Ray Dewitt's first time walking across the Mobi-Mat to access the beach on Malacompra Road. "(You) go right over the top of the mat. It’s supposed to be easy walking, easy to pull your buggies across," Dewitt said.
10-month-old drowns in Palm Coast family pool
The Flagler County Sheriff's deputies said the family was cooking, and someone opened the door to air out the house. That's when the baby crawled out and entered the pool. First responders don't know how long the baby was underwater. They worked to save her, but it was too late. Pediatric nurse Wendy Morris has seen the deaths of children firsthand and stresses to other parents to take precautions. She says she brings her children to a public pool often.

Bethune- Cookman University celebrates 114-year legacy
Founder's Day and Homecoming begins this weekend as the university uses this time to reflect on its legacy and its future. "I came in 1966, and I have seen this university grow," Daisy Grimes said. Years ago, Grimes walked the campus as a student. Now she serves as the director of Legacy Protocol and Women's Initiative. "When I came here, girls couldn't even wear pants," Grimes said. Animal abusers face jail, can't own pets under Ponce's Law

Deputies locate clothes missing, endangered Flagler teen last seen wearing
PALM COAST, Fla. — Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies reported Tuesday that the clothes missing teen Ricky Wheeler was last seen leaving his home in were located. Although the clothing was found, the missing and endangered 17-year-old has still not been located, the Sheriff’s Office said. The clothes he was last seen wearing were camouflage shorts, green Nike sneakers and a gray shirt with blue stripes.

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. — September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and Flagler County communities are rallying for families who are suffering. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year. Volusia beaches prep for Hurricane Florence impacts
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County beaches are preparing for the potential impacts of Hurricane Florence, as officials say they're already seeing signs it could be rough on the beaches.
