Born in Waterbury, we grew up in a closeknit extended family in the Bucks Hill neighborhood on North End of the city. Our families deeply valued hard work, education and service. We attended Waterbury public schools through 8th grade and then Sacred Heart High School before going on to college and medical or graduate school. Realizing the potential for science to improve human health, we each pursued careers in medical research.

Seizures are due to excessive, synchronous neuronal firing in the brain and are characteristic of epilepsy, the fourth most prevalent neurologic disease. Herein, we report handling-induced and spontaneous seizures in mice deficient of CD39, a cell-surface ATPase highly expressed on microglial cells.
