Ergothioneine as a Protective Agent Against Age- Related Diseases: Issues Needing More Research

You are already at the latest version Ergothioneine (ET) is a diet-derived compound that is avidly absorbed and retained by the human body using a specialised transporter, OCTN1. A substantial and growing body of evidence implicates ET in maintaining human health and protecting against age-related diseases, especially neurodegenerative diseases, and multiple studies indicate that low blood ET levels increase the risk of developing age-related diseases.
Ergothioneine as a potential protective agent against macular degeneration and other eye disorders
Abstract Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss in ageing populations, with oxidative stress recognised as a key pathogenic driver. The dietary antioxidant and cytoprotectant, L-ergothioneine (ET), is avidly accumulated in many tissues, especially the eye. However its relationship to AMD is unclear. Here, we examined ET’s distribution in human ocular tissues and measured serum and intraocular ET levels in patients with neovascular AMD.
