Rabobank backed a bid to preserve a Bolivian forest. It lost to Brazil’s ‘king of soy’

What’s the news? A 30,000 hectare plot of forest in Bolivia – roughly the size of Malta – has been sold to a family that owns one of the world’s largest soy companies, Bom Futuro. Bom Futuro has been accused of contributing to deforestation in the region. As much as two-thirds of the forest could be cleared to make space for agricultural operations if the family’s plans go ahead, amounting to millions of trees that could be cut.

Wat is het nieuws? De eigenaren van de Braziliaanse landbouwgigant Bom Futuro hebben in november 2025 een dertigduizend hectare groot bos in Bolivia opgekocht dat al een kwart eeuw duurzaam werd beheerd door de Nederlandse houthandelaar INPA uit Bergen op Zoom. Er was ook een andere overnamepartner in beeld: Rabobank hoopte het bos te kunnen beschermen met een investering van de Rabo Carbon Bank en andere partners. Toch koos de familie achter INPA uiteindelijk voor Bom Futuro.
