The case against concession fees for greenfield projects
Why do we have MPOs? • Who should pay for the Key Bridge replacement? • How much will Congress borrow for transportation? • Whatever happened to the national MBUF pilot project?
The value of managed lanes networks
Traffic congestion in major metropolitan areas limits economic activity, reduces safety, and robs commuters of personal time. Dynamic tolling, in which toll rates rise or fall based on traffic congestion, has been the most effective way to manage congestion. Since drivers may or may not want to pay tolls at all times, giving drivers a choice is important from a political and policy perspective. As a result, express toll lanes (ETLs) are expanding in multiple U.S. metro areas.
Building networks of managed lanes in big cities to reduce traffic congestion
Traffic congestion is a never-ending problem in large U.S. regions. While new non-priced lanes can help reduce congestion, they are not a long-term solution as they become congested within two to five years after opening. Variably priced managed lanes, which use dynamic pricing that rises or falls with demand to help manage traffic flow and maximize person-throughput, offer a non-congested alternative for automobiles, buses, and vanpools.
