State funding for Wisconsin’s childcare centers ended this week. Here’s how they plan to adapt

The last time Heather Murray raised rates at her Waunakee childcare center, two families left. She is ready for it to happen again when she increases tuition at the center in August. She doesn’t see another option for keeping the center open. Even with government funding, she said the center was just breaking even. Now, that funding has come to an end. The state’s Child Care Counts program distributed federal dollars directly to providers to keep them afloat during the pandemic.

Earlier this year, a woman incarcerated in a Wisconsin prison gave birth to a healthy baby boy. “It was beautiful. I did the best I could with what I was given,” said the woman, who spoke to WPR on the condition of anonymity because she could be penalized for speaking to a reporter. She knew her time with her newborn would be limited. There were two prison guards present at the birth. And in Wisconsin, incarcerated women have only 24 hours with their newborns.
