Carol Evans obituary
My mother, Carol Evans, who has died aged 85, was a quiet force for social justice. When she was recently admitted to hospital, Carol was asked by a nurse what she did. “I’m a political activist,” she replied. From 1998 until 2007, she worked for the High Peak Rural Deprivation Forum, a campaigning charity bringing together residents, voluntary groups and the statutory sector to take action for Peak District communities.
The idea of the 'career nemesis'
“How’s your nemesis doing?” a family member jokingly asked me the other day. I’ve been quite vocal over the years about someone who I constantly compare myself to. (My issue, not theirs.) I can offload to certain people in my family who are often intrigued slash baffled about the strange world of writing books and online. “They’re currently in America,” I sigh. “On a sold-out book tour.” Writer Roxane Gay has long written about the idea of a career nemesis.
How to stop getting distracted
As long as people have written they have procrastinated - and as long as they’ve procrastinated they’ve devised solutions to stop their distractions. Take this ingenious invention from science fiction author Hugo Gernsbeck. In 1925 he launched ‘The Isolator’ a helmet that encourages focus by eliminating 95% of all noise and restricting vision to a tiny horizontal slit.

The Bookseller’s Lockdown Diaries: The Publishing Entrepreneur
Boilers are the masters of timing — they know the exact moment to inflict maximum disruption. Federation of Small Businesses
By Bec Evans, Startup founder and writer My entrepreneurial journey started while I was working for someone else. As head of innovation, my day job was to turn ideas into profitable new products and services. At night and at the weekends I was working on a side hustle - getting my own business Prolifiko off the ground. Juggling my day job alongside a side business got me hooked on the approaches people take to make ideas happen.

I’ve always considered myself a lonesome kind of writer, most productive when it’s just me and my words. But, I must admit I’ve been missing a trick. This year I’ve been experimenting with different accountability structures. I’ve found that enlisting the support of buddies, coaches and structured writing challenges has transformed my output and progressed my writing in leaps and bounds.

Watch this video which puts Fenty Beauty to the test
There’s been a lot of hype since Rihanna dropped her Fenty Beauty products, mostly owing to the ambitious range of foundations. “All women deserve to feel beautiful and all women deserve to have a choice and an option when they go to the makeup counter,” she explained at her launch. All 40 shades of Fenty were developed with multiple ethnicities in mind from the palest end of the scale to the darkest.
Getting to ‘the end’ - how to finally finish writing your book
I have been witness to the precise moment when a book was written. I watched as the words ‘THE END’ were typed, as a long-held goal was achieved. I know the secrets – it involves big goals and tight deadlines, cute kittens and stunning views, and incredible focus. Here’s how to – finally – finish writing your book. Although she’d written five books before, Alison Jones was struggling to complete this one.
Monk or journalist - what’s your writing psychology?
There are squillions of tactics you can use to keep procrastination at bay and stay motivated with your work (we’ve been carping on about these for years), but there’s no right or wrong way to approach a writing project. Saying that, scientist and author Cal Newport has identified four writing psychologies – figuring out the pros and cons of each can help you find an approach that works for you.

Faced with her students’ procrastination, designer and lecturer Tash Willcocks set out to prove that small steps lead to big gains. Since February 2013 she’s hand drawn and published an illustration every day. From overcoming fear, to building a community, and finding happiness in the everyday, she shares valuable lessons about developing a daily creative habit. We’ve all been there. The more important a project is, the more likely it is that we’ll procrastinate.
The film that captures how epic being a teenager is
Cinema seldom depicts teenage life as both realistically messy and imbued with uncorrupted wisdom as director Jenny Gage’s insightful and personal documentary All This Panic. This is a film made for young women, about young women, with young women – it follows a group of friends and siblings, Sage, Ginger, Olivia, Lena (to name a few) and carefully weaves a narrative around them all.
Agents of Change
Agents of Change is an exiting documentary by award winning filmmaker Alice Russell following a passionate, intelligent and funny Londoner, concerned with ensuring a bright future amidst chaos and uncertainty.
Ten experimental filmmakers tackling the world’s big topics
The mass displacement of people because of war, bigotry, racism, hatred, discussions over whether people can use a fucking toilet, a continued transition of our lives from the “real” world online – these are the big issues confronting our societies today. People are now more obviously pitted against each other and with divisions more pronounced artists are needed to create work that enables us to feel and see past differences.
Want to make films with no creative limitations?
Directors – get ready. On January 30, applications open for the third year of STOP PLAY RECORD – a collaboration between the ICA and Dazed that supports selected filmmakers between the ages of 16 and 24 to get their films made. Chosen filmmakers will then get their films submitted to Channel 4 for the chance to have them broadcast nationally as part of their late night, three-minute short series, Random Acts.

Visit a sci-fi future where Kanye is galactic president
Take a futuristic, dystopic, 360-degree road trip – and take comfort in the fact it’s not real (not yet at least). I’m Cosmic is a collaboration between director Alex Tennyson from typeone.org, a creative technology company based among the warehouse community in Tottenham, and Isobel Mascarenhas-Whitman of ImageFiction Films.
This film exposes the reality of the UK’s housing crisis
Daisy-May Hudson’s upbeat tone drops a little when she starts talking about the UK housing crisis. I suppose this is to be expected, when, in your final year at university, you, your Mum and your sister become homeless. Halfway is Hudson’s directorial feature debut. It tells the story of her family, who were forced into temporary accommodation, and their battle with their local council to get themselves appropriately rehoused.
Here’s what your demons look like animated
We spoke to Chelou and Nor about “Halfway to Nowhere” and how they brought the video to life. The “Halfway to Nowhere” video was made with illustrator Polly Nor , whose work explores female sexuality, insecurities, past pains, and future desires with a frankness and dark sense of humour that’s rarely seen in the media. Guts, hair, dirty rooms, devils, and sensory greenery are recurring images in her work , and her video for Chelou (created with animator Andy Baker) includes them all.

The cameo comes after Birdy confessed to be a big fan of the Netflix show, and asked Brown to be involved in the clip. And the love wasn't unrequited, as NME reports that the actress has been “a Birdy fan for years”.
The exhibition trying to make art less ‘wanky’
Joe Goicoechea, Charlie Warcup and Sam Hamer openly admit there’s no real plan as such with their exhibition Loose London: they simply want to promote the art they love in whatever way they can, minus any pretence. It just so happens that the art they love is the art we love too. Hetty Douglas, who Dazed touted as one of ‘London’s new generation of painters’ will be on show with her work that takes our flippant social media interactions and intertwines them with her honed brush work.
How I wrote 29 stories in 29 days
I’m a bit of a left brain/right brain strange combination. I love writing and consider myself a highly creative person – but I’m also a number junkie too. I’ve just finished writing 29 plays in 29 days by taking part in a project run by The Space called 29 Plays Later. The combination of words and numbers really worked for me. It made me productive, motivated and even more excited about numbers. 1. Deadlines work. No surprises here.
How ‘Veep’ Creator Armando Iannucci Writes
