Pulaski County paramedic visits high-risk patients at home to reduce 911 calls

PULASKI COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - In 2025, Pulaski County received more than 6,000 EMS calls. According to Pulaski County Public Safety, only 122 of those led to emergent transportation to a hospital. Now, one paramedic is working to address that gap — visiting high-risk patients at home and connecting them with resources before a 911 call is ever needed. Erika Dalton, a community paramedic with Pulaski County Public Safety, said EMS has become a catch-all for non-emergency needs.

Galax marks 90th annual Old Fiddlers Convention with musicians from 40 states and three countries

GALAX, Va. (WDBJ) - The 90th annual Old Fiddlers Convention is underway in Galax, drawing musicians and attendees from approximately 40 states and three countries to celebrate old-time music and its heritage. The convention runs through Saturday night. Events include nightly competitions and late-night jam sessions that stretch until 2 to 3 a.m. The convention began in 1935 as a fundraiser for the Galax Moose Lodge, held at Galax High School. It has since grown into a week-long event.

Three Democrats face off in Montgomery County sheriff primary Tuesday

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - Three Democratic candidates are vying for the Montgomery County sheriff’s nomination Tuesday, competing for the seat vacated when Hank Partin retired in April after 30 years with the office, including a decade as its elected sheriff. The winner of Tuesday’s primary will face interim Sheriff Robert Page, who won the Republican firehouse primary in June, in the November general election.
