Redwood: The Untold Story of the Cold War’s Most Extraordinary Spy
On a hot autumn evening forty-five years ago, two spies, one from the KGB, the other from MI6, sat drinking vodka in the small bathroom of a house in the semi-abandoned compound of the British embassy in Tehran. The Russian, a very tall man, perched unsteadily on a laundry basket, while the Englishman sat on the toilet. Foreigners in Iran were closely monitored, so there was the strong possibility that the house was bugged.
Redwood: The Untold Story of the Cold War's Most Extraordinary Spy
The meeting had the potential to either yield a gold mine of intelligence or end in utter failure. There was a third possibility in the clandestine rendezvous that couldn’t be ignored by either Vladimir Kuzichkin or Ian McCredie: being discovered by Iranian intelligence services, which could lead to deadly consequences for both men. KGB major Kuzichkin and MI6 officer McCredie were enemies in the simmering Cold War.

Operace Double Cross - Ben Macintyre
O knize Operace Double Cross Dne 6.

10 best nonfiction books of the year
Where Rivers Part By Kao Kalia Yang The St. Paul writer had an astonishingly productive year, publishing four books aimed at various age groups. My favorite was her memoir of her mother, a companion to “The Song Poet” (about her father) that goes back to her mother’s youth to trace her astonishing story of survival — through multiple miscarriages, life in a refugee camp, marital woes, unsafe living conditions and more.

You And What Army?
Doc sent me news about Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram who is worth nearly 15 billion and now sits in detention somewhere in France. The situation reminds me of several things. The first comes from a book review I published over a decade ago. It was written by an ex-CIA agent who taught me a number of important lessons that I retain to this day. One of those lessons has to do with the nature of wealth- so let me get into them. The first has to do with cash.

We All Love To Complain About Historical Inaccuracies On Screen
It is that special time of year, when England unites to complain about the historical inaccuracies in The Crown and then settles down to enjoy a television series everyone knows is fictionalized. At the same time, the French press is in a lather over the depiction of Napoleon in Ridley Scott’s latest epic, complaining that the emperor did not take part in cavalry charges, did not fire a cannon at the pyramids and was not exactly the “sentimental brute” depicted. French audiences will love it.

Episode 56 - Aspects of History
This week’s podcast is with Ben Macintyre, the historian whose books read like thrillers. His latest is Colditz : Prisoners of the Castle , an account of the POW prison for those allied servicemen most troublesome for the Nazis. If you think you know the story, though, there is more to it than meets the eye. We also go on to talk about his other books, which deal with the KGB agent Oleg Gordievsky, the spy who changed history and Kim Philby, the Cambridge spy and traitor.

'Prisoners of the Castle': The Jewish prisoners of the Nazis at Colditz
Ben Macintyre is well known as the bestselling author of several books related to espionage during and after World War II. His book and the film based on it told the story of the greatest deception of the war – convincing Hitler that the Allies planned to make their Mediterranean crossing onto the European continent in Greece and not Italy. In Prisoners of the Castle, he turns to the remarkable story of Colditz Castle, made famous by its international collection of prisoners of war.
Running Target
In December 1930, Berlin’s elegant Mozart Hall was packed for the second screening of All Quiet on the Western Front, the film of Erich Maria Remarque’s novel of life and death in the trenches of the First World War. The book, published the previous year, was already a sensation, the first genuine international bestseller, with more than 1.5 million copies sold in Germany and another 600,000 in Britain and France. The Hollywood adaptation by Universal Pictures was the talk of Berlin.
The Phantom of the Royal Opera
“He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor,” declares Prince Harry, in his memoir. “I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me.” It’s vivid stuff, right down to the passive-aggressive “I didn’t attack you, Harold”, uttered by a “piping hot” Prince William as he storms out, leaving behind a broken brother and shattered dog bowl. This is the authentic voice of Prince Harry: frustrated, peevish, detailed, retaliatory.

How a Group of Maverick Officers Formed the S.A.S. in the Darkest Days of W.W. II
In 2014 I was approached by a publisher with an offer I could not refuse. Would I agree to write the authorized wartime history of the SAS with unprecedented and unrestricted access to the regiment’s secret archives? Had this offer been made by hand, I would have bitten it off. The Special Air Service retains an extraordinary grip on the British imagination.
BOOK REVIEW | Colditz: Prisoners of the Castle
By Ben Macintyre The bestselling historian with the incredible true story of WW2’s most infamous Nazi prison. In a forbidding Gothic castle on a hilltop in the heart of Nazi Germany, an unlikely band of British officers spent the Second World War plotting daring escapes from their German captors. Or so the story of Colditz has gone, unchallenged for 70 years. But that tale contains only part of the truth.

A tale of WWII derring-do that reveals the humanity of its heroes
In 1943, French prisoners of war launched a mouse wearing a tiny parachute from a fourth-story window of Colditz, an ancient castle towering over Germany's Mulde River. The liberation of the miniature paratrooper reflected the men's boredom in captivity - but also their aspirations. Many of the detainees in the castle were obsessed with planning their own flights to freedom, plotting and executing escape attempts ranging from the inspired to the impossible.
The 1970s Sitcom "Fawlty Towers" Could Never Be Made Today
Very occasionally, even The Times of Londongets it spectacularly wrong. “What is John Cleese doing in this lame hotel farce?” demanded the paper’s reviewer after watching the first episode of Fawlty Towers in 1975. The Daily Mirror pronounced: “Long John Short On Jokes.” The series ran for only 12 half-hour episodes, yet Fawlty Towers has embedded itself in the culture like no other sitcom. In 2000 the British Film Institute named it the best British TV program of all time.

Prisoners of the Castle: An Epic Story of Survival and Escape from Colditz, the Nazis' Fortress Prison|Hardcover
English 0593136330 Notes From Your Bookseller Ben Macintyre, a virtuoso chronicler of WWII and bestselling author of Operation Mincemeat, turns his focus from his more usual intrepid spies to the history of Colditz Castle, the infamous maximum security Nazi prison, and the audacious exploits of its escape-prone Allied denizens. Prisoners of the Castle is a propulsive, almost cinematic read.
Vladimir Putin has Taken "Dictator Style" to New Extremes
Dictators have always fussed over interior decor, the furniture and soft furnishings, the accoutrements, color schemes and wall art that say so much about a tyrant. No matter how much stolen money the despot spends on his gold taps and marble-lined mega-jacuzzi, the result always ends up looking cheap and hideous.
