“There’s no question about it,” US President Donald Trump said at this month’s FIFA World Cup Final Draw ceremony: The game that Americans call soccer “is football,” and the United States has to “come up with another name” for its National Football League (NFL). China’s clean tech charm offensive wins Global South hearts and minds
Air travellers making the descent into Islamabad, Nairobi or São Paulo may be struck by the sight of solar panels scattered liberally over the rooftops. Regular visitors to Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital city, will probably have detected a marked improvement in air quality and traffic noise of late, owing to the shift from combustion engines towards electric vehicles. Hanoi and Addis Ababa may soon follow. What’s behind the growing spread of clean technology in developing countries? In a word, China.

What can COP30 achieve, following US withdrawal and underwhelming climate plans?
It is easy to feel uninspired about the UN’s upcoming climate change conference, COP30, taking place 10–21 November in Belém, Brazil. A key ask for governments ahead of the conference is to submit new national climate plans (Nationally Determined Contributions, NDCs) covering the period up to 2035.
Can Europe and China forge a climate connection?
Earlier this year, the Chinese firm CATL, the world’s largest battery-maker, unveiled an electric-vehicle (EV) battery capable of delivering a remarkable 520 kilometres (323 miles) of driving range after just five minutes of charging. The announcement came a month after BYD, China’s leading EV manufacturer, launched its own ultra-fast charging system. In solar, too, the numbers are staggering: Chinese firms can now produce over 1,200 gigawatts of solar panels annually.
The UN climate process remains indispensable
In recent months, critics have renewed attacks claiming that the United Nations climate negotiations are broken beyond repair. Bjørn Lomborg has long dismissed the COP process as a ‘ circus’ of non-binding pledges. Alex Epstein says restricting fossil fuel use in developing countries is ‘ immoral’. Even insiders like Christiana Figueres and Mary Robinson warn that weak targets and unmet finance promises risk eroding the legitimacy of the process.
The UN climate process remains indispensable
Replacing the process is not an option if any form of multilateralism is to remain. The real challenge is evolution. The system has adapted before. Kyoto provided a relatively rigid top-down model. Paris evolved into a more flexible approach that balanced collective ambition with national preferences. The system must adapt again. A three-pronged proposal offers a way that acknowledges the complexity of implementing policy. First: link corporate and national action.

Viewpoint: Resilience is key to climate action in a disrupted world. Here’s why
By Bernice Lee Following the Paris Agreement, corporate enthusiasm for climate action surged, with net-zero commitments and the energy transition taking a central role in both government and business agendas. However, political shifts and implementation challenges have slowed that momentum.
Why resilience is key to climate action in a disrupted world
The path to net-zero is far from smooth as the world grapples with geopolitical tensions and shifting priorities. In response to these challenges, resilience offers a framework for adapting to a wide range of disruptions. Corporate leaders can tackle climate change whilst addressing the concerns of different stakeholders.

Sorry, GDP. There Are Other Ways to Measure a Nation’s Worth Original
On June 3, 2022, as United Nations members gathered to celebrate the 50th World Environment Day, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said it was time to eschew using gross domestic product as a measure of economic strength, as it rewards pollution and waste. “Let us not forget that when we destroy a forest, we are creating GPD,” he said. “GDP is not the way to measure richness in the present situation of the world.
Sorry, GDP. There Are Other Ways to Measure a Nation’s Worth
Quick Summary: A country’s real wealth lies in its equality, environment, and happiness. One often cited example has been Bhutan’s National Happiness Index, enshrined in its Constitution, which encompasses psychological health, living standards, community vitality and environmental resilience. But ultimately the purpose of new economic indicators will be about delivering better results for people, and there will be much anger if policymakers fall short.
COP27: What was achieved, and what needs to happen now
Loss and Damage fund is a historic moment Anna Aberg COP27 will go down in history as the UN climate change conference where the Loss and Damage fund was agreed. After decades of pushing, this is a momentous victory for climate-vulnerable developing countries. The shift in the conversation – and in the positions of developed countries – since COP26 is remarkable.
Geopolitical problems must not hamper progress at COP27
Although global attention on COPs fluctuates from year to year, ultimately all of them are important, even those where big decisions are not expected. One of the reasons for this is that the coming together of all parties can act as push mechanisms for new political leadership on climate to emerge, in sometimes unexpected ways. At COP26, the US turnaround on climate following the election of President Joe Biden provided hope and momentum.
Finance key for UK to unlock progress to COP27
Bernice Lee, Chatham House Two months on from the final gavel at COP26, attention must now turn seriously to the job ahead for the UK presidency – to implement the Glasgow Climate Pact. With the theatre of negotiations done, what matters now is to ensure that what was promised gets delivered. The overall outcome can seem glass half full or glass half empty; it is important for the UK presidency to be pushing on the half-full aspects in particular, to go further.

"Forked" by Jo Tan: Shapeshifting Identities
By Bernice Lee (722 words, 5-minute read) Jo Tan’s first full-length play Forked hits plenty of right notes. High energy, uncomfortably honest and deliberately racist, it’s funny because it’s true. In spite of its great momentum however, the play’s pace feels weighed down by its thematic frames, just as the characters are stuck within their social constructs.
Astrid Boons: Belgian Choreographer brings "Vestige" to Singapore
By Bernice Lee (974 words, 5 minute read) I caught Astrid Boons between rehearsals in Korzo for Vestige. She’s preparing to restage the work, rehearsing with a new cast member who had thankfully been part of the original creative process. She shares that coming to Singapore is a result of happenstance: Dimo Kirilov, who presented at M1 CONTACT previously, saw the work last November and recommended it to Festival Director Kuik Swee Boon.
"Off Stage" at M1 Contact 2018: Communicating Beyond The Stage
By Bernice Lee (1100 words, six-minute read) M1 Contact Contemporary Dance Festival has become a staple of the contemporary dance scene in Singapore. It has used its resources to bring forward voices, particularly from the region, in an act of affirmation. Balancing local and international artists, bringing in projects mostly of an indie nature, this artist-led festival plays the important role of celebrating thoughtful choreographic voices across a spectrum of experience.

Globalisation is in crisis. Here’s how we can make it work for all
XN3epxeQO7J Just as climate change worsens existing vulnerabilities such as food poverty and water shortages, trade amplifies weaknesses in the social fabric. In regions where people have fallen behind economically due to political neglect and technological change, it is jobs lost in the face of import competition that make the headlines.
Six home truths for the new head of the WTO
The race to be the next Director-General (DG) of the World Trade Organisation is now down to two candidates: Ngozi Okonjo Iweala of Nigeria, and Yoo Myung-hee of South Korea. Whoever prevails will face the reality as the global trade body chief. The DG has little power to strong-arm governments into agreements, or to remould underlying power dynamics. But she can provide the mood music at a time when trade is not only weaponised but also a weapon of choice. A few home truths here might be helpful. 1.
