Books that Served as Spiritual Gateways Early in my Journey
What incited remembering and started to shape my understanding I’m a researcher at heart, and a lover of stories, so it makes sense that much of the information that has come into my awareness on my awakening journey has often come in the form of books. Books have taught me accessible practices and skills as well as helped me to form perspectives and spark the remembering of my soul, and in this way have served as gateways to the next version of myself.
A Hidden Benefit of Meditation
It bears repeating: there was a significant portion of my life where I loathed meditation and the only reason I turned back to it was it was a change that came through on a reiki attunement. It may have just been the larger invitation to head down that path now, too, but there were 39 years that I resented being made to meditate by others and being told to incorporate it myself. I say this because I understand why it is such an eye roller when people recommend it.
Why I Don’t Believe in ‘Chosen Ones’
And what I believe instead! I spent many years of my life hoping that there was more to life than what was set out before me. What has been set out before me has always been a gorgeous spread, don’t get me wrong. The 3D world has been full of gifts.
Two Underrated Milestones of Middle Age
Beth Donovan · Follow 5 min read · -- Photo by Slava Auchynnikau on Unsplash I taught Human Development twice at the college level as a graduate student, and having taken the course myself in both college and grad school, I noticed that the material was heavily slanted toward children and adolescents.
The Call to Return to Spirituality
Season recap: enticements as a teenager/young adult that taught me about not pursuing things I’m not ready for, and then after I get through my career establishment/family creation bucket list I let my writing practice seduce me into basic spirituality practices and attitudes on the sly. And I’ve been warned I’ll have the chance to come back, right after I started the first post graduate school gig. Fascinating about that tidbit, though, it only existed in my awareness.
The Heart of a Life Coach: A Superpower Beyond Measure
by Beth Donovan https://bethdonovan.com In a world brimming with motivational speakers, self-help books, and endless online resources, life coaches stand out. They are the people who help us navigate the complexities of life. While their skills and knowledge are invaluable, a life coach’s true superpower lies in their Heart. Empathy is the cornerstone of effective coaching. A life coach’s ability to genuinely understand the feelings of their clients creates a safe space for growth.
Unexpected Side Effects of Awakening
Unexpected Side Effects of Awakening What I didn’t know until I was already there Photo by Mathias Reding on Unsplash Likely I’ve already mentioned that I had a murky concept of awakening at best until I was in the thick of it. But it bears repeating for the context of this article. If you see yourself in these words, let me know in the comments.

Three More Things that Surprise Me About Parenting
Despite my experiences as a therapist for children and families Choosing and posting on only three fun surprises in parenting opened a Pandora’s box of “oh, and”s in my mind, so I’m back with three more to share. I realized at the end of my last article that part of my purpose in sharing this was wanting other parents to feel seen in a way that engenders self compassion.
Coming out of the Spiritual Closet on Medium
It’s time. Spiritually, I’ve been a bit of a ringer. I say bit because I don’t mean to mislead anyone, especially not to gain an advantage, and, it’s not like I’m hiding these incredible spiritual talents and gifts. But when I have shown up in spiritual circles, people have been uncertain to the extent that I’m truly embracing the path. Or that I’ve been as far down it as I have. Like everyone I didn’t think I really had more experience than others because I assumed everyone knew what I knew.
Three things That Surprised Me About Parenting
Despite my experiences as a therapist for children and families Truly, I did not enter motherhood thinking that the four solid post training years I had as a therapist working only with children and families armed me with everything I needed to know about being a parent. I actually think that pregnancy encased me in a weird sense of either denial, or just an energy of I’ll deal with the next immediate goal before thinking about the next.
Preventatively speaking: smokers should get screened for lung cancer
by Beth Donovan | Special to the Courier Fewer Americans are smoking cigarettes these days, and that’s a good thing since smoking is the leading factor contributing to the risk developing lung cancer. The next biggest factor is age. Although treatments are becoming more effective over time and there are more options available, just over 20% of people with lung cancer will live longer than five years after diagnosis.
The Magical Childhood
How one Mom’s definition has changed For context, I was born in 1981 and although that puts me as a millennial, I had enough of an analog childhood and the socially accepted at the time parenting, I consider myself an X-ennial. I love to tell the younger people I work with that I was in high school before ‘the interwebs came to town.’ I had a good childhood, but none of us escape that time of our lives without a good idea of what we would do the same or differently.
Preventing cardiovascular disease
by Beth Donovan | Special to the Courier No one wants to talk about cardiovascular disease around the holidays, but what better time to bring up the conversation than when you are with the people you love the most? Maybe we should talk more about how to determine your own risk and what we are doing to protect ourselves. Perhaps that will motivate someone you love to consider their own risk and whether they should be doing more.

Preventatively speaking: fall 2023 vaccine rundown
by Beth Donovan | Special to the Courier It is time to get your annual flu shot. But what else? What about these other vaccines? Is the “triple threat” really coming this fall? Yes, it is. To what degree it will affect us is yet to be seen, but public health experts warn that we should be prepared. The triple threat is influenza, Covid-19, and respiratory syncytial virus. Influenza and RSV tend to be seasonal and have been around long enough that we can predict patterns.
Preventatively speaking: avoiding birth defects
Photo by Luma Pimentel on Unsplash by Beth Donovan | Special to the Courier During a pregnancy, we do everything we can to have a healthy baby; we avoid drinking alcohol, doing drugs, and using tobacco products. We eat right and take a prenatal vitamin. If we plan to become pregnant, most of us do these things in preparation while we are trying to get pregnant. That prenatal vitamin is key to preventing a birth defect called neural tube defects.

Preventatively speaking: avoiding “bad teeth”
by Beth Donovan | Special to the Courier Have you ever wondered why some people seem to have “bad teeth” and have lots of dental work done? We all know people who seem to have a lot of cavities filled and even crowns and root canals while others have very few. There are many factors that contribute to our oral health, but getting the right amount of fluoride early in life can be a key contributor to healthy teeth in the future.
Colorectal cancer: tips for avoiding, detecting
by Beth Donovan | Special to the Courier Cancer in the colon or rectum, collectively referred to as colorectal cancer, is the third most common type of cancer for both men and women. It is expected to account for over 52,000 deaths in the US in 2023, according to the American Cancer Society. Rates of this cancer increase with age and are higher among Black and Native American people. This cancer, if detected early, can be successfully treated.
Happiness and Perfectionism
Today a colleague wrote something that gave me pause to remember a few things. I am an ex-perfectionist by choice. I spent what seemed like an eternity of a traumatic life to get there, feeling as if I were always letting someone down. My favorite aunt finally said to me, “You can define your own success.” After processing and internalizing that for years, I finally took steps to make it happen. My colleague’s words reminded me of a favorite quote by John Lennon.
