Beating procrastination: Discomfort is normal
Ah, the myth of willpower. If willpower reliably worked for procrastination, we could just deploy it as needed, right? But procrastination is complex. When a task stirs up discomfort, fear or unfamiliarity, the survival or lizard part of our brains perceives a threat. To “avoid danger” we run to safety and familiarity: scrolling, YouTubing, snacking, etc.
Procrastination can wreak havoc, but you can beat it, students
Summer is over. You’re pumped. “It’s going to be different this year! I’ll stay on top of things.” And then, … the procrastination cycle begins: avoiding, scrolling and excuses. Deadlines creep up and work gets done in a rush at the cost of quality. You don’t even really enjoy the distractions because of the stress and guilt. And it happens over and over. Procrastination is not simple. Overcoming it begins with self-reflection, recognizing habits and being honest about what holds you back.

Tsuru, who spoke briefly about his diagnosis, served as honorary chair while his wife Stephanie Tsuru chaired the record-setting event at River Oaks Country Club.

FOR THE PAST three years, due to COVID-19, Houston’s artists’ advocacy and support organization Fresh Arts has had to cancel its popular annual fundraising gala, which accounts for around 20 percent of its operating revenue. And this year’s gala was nearly derailed by a devastating fire at Winter Street Studios in December, which destroyed several artist studios and displaced all of its tenants, including Fresh Arts.

“THEY WERE PRETTY zany and wacky in many ways,” says director and native Houstonian Tiffany Nichole Greene of her high school drama teachers. “But at the time, they are the people that are pouring energy into you and giving you that space to express yourself.” Greene is no doubt drawing on her formative experiences as a drama student to direct Vichet Chum’s coming of age comedy, High School Play: A Nostalgia Fest, which runs through Feb. 13 at the Alley.

Historic Judgement of Paris Recreated in This Stunning Houston Symphony Wine Dinner
We would guess that more than a few of the black-tie-attired guests were stumped by the “Judgment of Paris, Act II” theme for the Houston Symphony Wine Dinner & Collector’s Auction. If you weren’t thinking wine in 1976, you might have missed the premiere Judgment in which California wines formally challenged French. California won in a monumental upset. On this night, two California and two French vintages were pitted against one another in a blind dinner tasting on stage at Jones Hall.
