Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Beat reporter.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, but not for my job.

How is social media changing news?

It is accelerating the pace of news but making it more egalitarian at the same time. There is an audience for everything/anything online.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Peter Parker.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means documenting the world around you as accurately as you can and making that documentation available for other people to see and hear.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

By email. Be sure you have contact info for someone living or working in Maine that I can talk to.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Laptop, smartphone, digital camera, a whole lot of Google Drive, Adobe Premiere, DropBox, Pixlr, - and, yes, pens and paper notepads.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter. It's the perfect online medium for disseminating commentary and news links.

Who do you wish followed you?

Jacques Cousteau.

Why did you become a journalist?

Not to pay the bills. I want to know how and why people interact with each other and with the world around them.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No. I helped start a short-lived 'alternative' campus journal in college.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Any story that shows how people are affected by regulatory or environmental changes in or along the shore of the Gulf of Maine.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be curious, earnest and objective. Document the world around you, put it online and develop an audience. Keep your eyes and mind open.

When's the best time to pitch you?

In the morning.
