Richard Dawkins: Falling Down Mount Improbable
Richard Dawkins’ identification of others as intellectually deluded concerning the existence of God is based on an argument that succumbs to the logical analysis reductio ad absurdum. Dawkins confuses addition with multiplication. Richard Dawkins’ argument for the nonexistence of God is the central argument of his book, The God Delusion.
Alliance Day
On May 6, 1778, General George Washington gathered his army on the Grand Parade at Valley Forge to celebrate the recently formed alliance with France. Having lost Philadelphia, the seat of the Continental Congress, to British forces as well as a series of battles the previous fall, Washington’s army welcomed the news of their alliance with pomp and parade. That morning, at 11:00 am, the rumble of drums and musketry echoed through the army camp at Valley Forge in celebration.
Bookworm: ‘Blue Star’ will put you on the edge of your seat
“The Woman with the Blue Star” By Pam Jenoff c. 2021, Park Row Books $17.99, $22.99 Canada; 336 pages Unthinkable. That’s what this situation is: unthinkable, with a line you won’t cross no matter what. You’ve thought about it, considered all possible solutions, studied this whole thing from many angles and in the end, there’s just no way. But as in the new novel, “The Woman with the Blue Star” by Pam Jenoff, never say “never.” At eighteen years old, Sadie Gault was hardly a child anymore.
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
Overall 5 out of 5 stars Performance 5 out of 5 stars Story 5 out of 5 stars Easy to Listen To, Difficult to Hear About Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West, by Dee Brown, and narrated By Grover Gardner. I first read the history in the late 1970s. I had to stop before I finished the complete paperback. Too much sorrow. But its poignancy remained in my mind these last 30 years. So it was time to go to the book again. This time on Audible.
Bayes and Blueberries; or, Say “No” to Algebra
“Nix algebra, deaths, and vampires” was the message I received in comments on my previous essay. I am omitting the algebra from this essay. In this essay, I am also saying “No” to deaths and vampires. To replace them, I am saying “Yes” to cereal and cereal topped with blueberries. Without algebraic symbols, this essay will demonstrate the illogic of Raphael Lataster’s “Bayesian reasoning” (p.
Bayes’ Theorem, Vampires, and the Bible
Can Bayes’ theorem debunk tales of vampires or books of the Bible, such as the Lucan book of Acts, identifying it as mythology as evidenced by its reporting of a slaying by an angel? Raphael Lataster, a professional in religious studies at the University of Sidney argues the affirmative for biblical literature. Specifically, Lataster has applied what he calls Bayesian reasoning (p. 286) to falsify the report in Acts 12:21-23 of Herod Agrippa’s death as slain by an angel.
Last Men Out
As Saigon fell, a small band of Marines pulled off the final evacuation. During the United States’ final 24 hours in Vietnam, American nationals and Vietnamese refugees were crowded onto Marine and Air Force helicopters that landed within the U.S. embassy compound.

Winter at Valley Forge: George Washington’s Most Dismal Christmas Ever
December 23, 1777 dawned cold and dank over the hills of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, the scent of snow in the air. General George Washington, pacing the headquarters tent of his revolutionary army’s winter encampment, was dictating a testy ultimatum to the Continental Congress, laced with what he called his “infinite pain and concern.” On his mind? British troop advancement and the dire state of his forces.
Military History Book Review: Halsey’s Typhoon
Halsey’s Typhoon: The Epic Story of a Fighting Admiral, an Epic Storm and an Untold Rescue by Bob Drury and Tom Clavin, Atlantic Monthly Press, New York, 2007, $25. On December 18, 1944, Admiral William F. Halsey’s Third Fleet suffered one of the worst defeats in the history of the U.S. Navy. Three destroyers were lost, a dozen other warships crippled and 146 aircraft destroyed. In addition, 793 sailors lost their lives—more than twice the number lost in the Battle of Midway.
5 Little-Known Facts About Washington And That Winter In Valley Forge
Yes, 250 years of illustrations have portrayed a Continental Army perpetually snowbound in its winter encampment. Yet historical records confirm that the winter of 1777-1778 was fairly mild by southeast Pennsylvania standards, with the mercury dropping into single digits only twice. It is true that nearly 2,000 soldiers died at Valley Forge, many from exposure, but this was more the result of an almost criminal lack of food and clothing, with disease completing the truly miserable picture.
Wedding a first at St. Andrews Village
We all know feel-good stories on the internet or on TV, but nothing compares to experiencing one in the moment. And that is exactly what happened on Saturday, September 8 when two independent living residents tied the knot at St. Andrews Village Retirement Community in Boothbay Harbor. People can find love at any age and that was definitely the case for Leonard Belanger and Margaret (Peggy) Coolong.
An Alamo Stand in Saigon | HistoryNet
The last Americans in Vietnam vowed to fight to the death as desperate refugees stormed the U.S. Embassy, and NVA tanks approached on the streets below. The noose was tightening around Saigon in the dark morning hours of April 30, 1975. The previous 24 hours had seen the frenzied evacuations of thousands via helicopters, since fixed-wing aircraft escape was rendered impossible after the Tan Son Nhut runway had been bombed.

Book review: 'Lucky 666' is stunning saga of a suicidal sortie
It didn’t go unnoticed that there weren’t many veterans who were at Pearl Harbor that frightful December day in 1941 still around to observe the recent ceremonies marking the 75th anniversary of the attack.
THE HEART OF EVERYTHING THAT IS
In 1868, Red Cloud, a respected Oglala chief, led an intertribal war against the U.S. Army and won. Waters’ adaptation reiterates the subtitle’s claim that it's an untold story (“his story has long been forgotten by conventional American history”), though this is far from the first book about him, and contemporary tribal nations honor his legacy. Unfortunately, this book’s outsider perspective is all too evident.
The Final Flight of Old 666
"Old 666" appears in the last seconds of a 1943 film depicting F-4 Lightning aircraft from the 8th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron based north of Port Moresby, New Guinea—the only known image of the ill-fated bomber. The “Eager Beavers” repeatedly volunteered for risky reconnaissance missions. Front row: William Vaughn, George Kendrick, Johnnie Able, Herbert Pugh. Back row: Bud Thues, Jay Zeamer, Hank Dyminski, Joe Sarnoski.
The Washington Red Clouds: A team name to honor a great warrior and leader
In June 1870, the most powerful American Indian leader in the country, Red Cloud, arrived in Washington with a contingent of Oglala and Brule Sioux. He was treated as a head of state, given tours of the Capitol and the Washington Navy Yard — where he witnessed a gunnery demonstration — and was feted at a White House reception hosted by President Ulysses S. Grant. The former commander of the Union armies may have recognized the significance of Red Cloud accomplishing in two years what Robert E.

You: A Novel eBook: Caroline Kepnes: Kindle Store
I’m not even sure where to begin. I have to say this book isn’t exactly what I thought it was going to be. I’m not upset, but I guess I’m not thrilled either. While half the time I didn’t know how I felt about this book, I couldn’t put it down. I had to know what was going to happen next, to whom it would happen to, and why. Everything about this book is intense. I honestly still think I’m a little shocked by the happenings inside the story.
Lindsay Lohan and the Chikungunya Virus
|
Lindsay Lohan isn't about to let a tiny thing like the chikungunya virus—a nasty mosquito-borne disease—stop her from enjoying a South Pacific vacation. Or at least that's what she's been announcing on social media in recent days. On Saturday, she Tweeted this message: "Before I got chikungunya," followed by several crying emoticons, and then "use Big spray please," although we think she meant bug spray. Or maybe not. When you're a celebrity, everything comes super-sized, right?

A Non-Historical Question about Jesus of Nazareth
Peter Kreeft recently presented an essay on the theme that, in his claim to be God, the historical Jesus of Nazareth could not have been wrong and still been a good man. If not God, he would have had to have been a liar, a lunatic, a guru believing in some form of universal divinity, or a non-historical person, a legend. The claim of the Catholic Church is that she is the mystical body of Christ, whose living head is Jesus of Nazareth.
George Washington's Secret Six: The Spy Ring That Saved the American Revolution eBook: Brian Kilmeade, Don Yaeger: Kindle Store
