It was 12 July 1995. At noon, the 41-year-old Saliha Osmanović was braving the overpowering heat in front of the former accumulator factory in Potočari, where she and thousands of women and children had sought refuge at the UN peacekeeping outpost. The day before, the Serbian forces broke through into nearby Srebrenica after a prolonged siege. Though the town had been declared a UN Safe Area, the blue helmets made no effort to stop the Serbian push.

A year of horror in Gaza, the graveyard of civilisation

On 16 September 2024, the Palestinian Ministry of Health published a 649-page document listing most of the deaths caused by the Israeli collective punishment of Gaza for the Hamas massacre on 7 October 2023. The list includes more than 34,000 of the 41,000 Gazans who died directly in air strikes. The remainder of the casualties have yet to be identified.

While politicians, analysts and journalists, in sportscaster style, count the hours, days or weeks until a possible major escalation or war in the Middle East, and as Israel, despite indications that it may soon find itself in the biggest (security) crisis in its entire history, continues mass killings and demolitions in the Gaza Strip, we have to ask whether there is an actor in the wider international community who is trying to stop this possibly fatal course of events.
