Uptick in Social Security checks for 2019 as inflation rises
FILE - In this Feb. 11, 2005 file photo, trays of printed social security checks wait to be mailed from the U.S. Treasury's Financial Management services facility in Philadelphia. Tens of millions of Social Security beneficiaries and other retirees can expect an increase in benefits next year as inflation edges higher. The government announced a cost-of-living adjustment of 2.8 percent on Thursday. That would mean an extra $39 a month for the average retired worker. (AP Photo/Bradley C. Bower, File)
Phillies to start a lefthander (Ranger Suarez), finally | Extra Innings
Chase Utley’s return to Philadelphia was the headline event during the Los Angeles Dodgers’ three days at Citizens Bank Park, but the appearance of Manny Machado in just his second series since being traded from the Baltimore Orioles made for a nice subplot. If the Phillies do indeed still plan to make a run at Machado when the 26-year-old shortstop becomes eligible for free agency after the season, then they have to be pleased with the impression they made on him.
This Bucks County, Pa., dad has primary custody of his kids, 16 and 4. Now, he faces deportation
When his father goes off to work, 4-year-old Carter Diaz cries inconsolably. So Carter’s older sister, Isabella, 16, isn’t sure how she’ll be able to comfort him if immigration authorities deport her father, a Mexican immigrant who has lived, worked, and raised a family in this country with permission of the U.S. government for more than a decade, under an order of supervision renewed every two years.
ICE protester sues Philly police, young Pa. farmers shake up industry | Morning Newsletter
Welcome to Wednesday, Philadelphia. If you’re starting your day with some local organic produce, you’ll be interested in our first story of the morning. In Pennsylvania a new crop of farmers is changing the industry by focusing on sustainable and organic practices, and bringing their young families along for the ride.
Like your organic food? Pennsylvania's young farmers are growing it
While he was studying political science at West Chester University six years ago, Frank Kurylo pondered some career options. He first considered becoming an environmental law attorney. Later, he briefly worked on a few Pennsylvania political campaigns. Then Kurylo, now 28, changed course entirely. He became a farmer. “We’ve got 100 million acres of U.S. farmland expected to change hands in the next five years.
Down on the farm with the robots and drones
While Dave Bitler is counting sheep at night in his quaint Berks County farmhouse, laser-guided robots are milking his cows out in the barn. These robots lure Bitler’s herd, the bovine version of Pavlov’s dogs, into state-of-the-milking stalls with a reward of high-nutrient pellets and a splash of molasses.
Muhammad Ali's secluded Pa. camp and the fight to save it, led by John Madden's son
ORWIGSBURG, Pa. – Inside the log gymnasium that was this rustic training camp’s centerpiece, in the small room where Muhammad Ali got rubdowns on an old yellow couch, dozens of messages, etched into pine walls like hieroglyphics, tell the story of the legendary boxer’s tenure at this remote Schuylkill County hideaway.
She was just out of rehab. She was excited about the future. Three hours later, she was dead.
When Jessica Ney stopped by his office one morning in March, Joe Quinn thought she looked happier than he’d ever seen her. She’d just gotten out of rehab for her heroin addiction and couldn’t wait to get her life restarted, she told Quinn and other outreach workers at Pathways to Housing, the innovative Philadelphia program that helped her get a place to live even before she got sober. Quinn tried to coax her to stay for a group therapy session he was about to lead.
Pottstown took on the YMCA - and won. They're saving themselves along the way. | Maria Panaritis
There are so many heroes in this story, I almost don’t know which of them to begin praising first. For starters, they include the people of Pottstown. And a Phoenixville native named Chuck Gulati.
A look at the Phillies' minor-league teams
Here is a quick look at the Phillies’ four minor-league teams that open this week. One of the things to watch is the development of 2017 second-round draft choice Spencer Howard, a righthander from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo. He had 40 strikeouts in 28 1/3 innings for short-season Williamsport last year. If the 21-year-old Howard pitches as well as expected, he could move up to Clearwater before the season’s end. Also, power-hitting outfielder Jhalian Ortiz, 19, will be interesting to watch.
Black farmers finding their way in the fields and empty lots of Pennsylvania
A slinking winter sun made Ray Chavous’s chestnut and sandy mares glow in the fields of his Berks County farm. He fished a pinch of tobacco from his flannel shirt, rolled a smoke, and stepped into a weather-worn shed. Long, thin strips of leather dangled from hooks; one with “God is Here, Amen” embossed on it hung like a banner from the rafters. A raspy little radio played gospel, and dusty pictures of black cowboys were framed beside strange tools and saddles stacked shoulder-high.
The hottest Super Bowl party is in a Berks backyard - Philly
Some so-and-so whom Barry “The Hatchet” Vagnoni barely remembered called him up last week, supposedly to catch up on old times. The Hatchet’s never been more focused, though, on his destiny — to throw the biggest Super Bowl party Berks County has ever seen — and he knew that this shmoe from a men’s softball league way-back-when was sniffing around for an invite. No dice, The Hatchet said. “He acted like he was really offended,” Vagnoni said Thursday morning.
Does Phoenixville have the best police blotter in the world?
Every week people question whether the Phoenixville Police Department’s incident blotters — which are posted to the department’s Facebook page — are real or not. Take this entry from Nov. 3: “…at 5:45 p.m., police responded to the unit block of E. Walnut Street for a report of a woman with a deceased possum. Insisting the animal had been shot, the intoxicated resident began using her fingers to dig inside the carcass for the bullet.
Franklin & Marshall program offers a window into colleges' bid to attract low-income students
LANCASTER — Caden Pensak never liked writing poetry. Now, he loves it, thanks to the infectious enthusiasm of his summer-program professor at Franklin & Marshall College. “Having a passionate teacher is all the world to a student,” said Pensak, 17, a rising senior at Huntington Area High School in central Pennsylvania. Pensak said he has been in schools where he wasn’t inspired. He’s attended 26 since kindergarten, as his family moved for what he described as economic, family and job reasons.
Trump Names Bankruptcy Attorney with Right-Wing Views as Ambassador to Israel
Those holding out hope for peace in the Middle East may have to wait another four years. On Thursday, Donald Trump named David Friedman as his nominee for ambassador to Israel, handing one of the world’s most important diplomatic posts to his personal bankruptcy lawyer, a close friend with no diplomatic experience. More important, Friedman is a pro-settlement extremist aligned with the farthest-right elements of Zionism.
