True renaissance of track cycling could signal the end of the Great British blip
It was an eye-popping hour or two watching the opening day of the World Track Cycling championships in Berlin yesterday as Denmark’s men broke the word Team Time Trial record twice, while Italy and New Zealand also dropped below 3mins 48 secs, which was once considered impossible.
If laws are applied correctly, then 'painting the right picture' will be forgotten art
The recent Saracens psycho drama has thrown a spotlight onto rugby union and its relationship with breaking the law – or cheating as we ‘rugby heads’ snootily call it in other sports. Rugby has the reputation of representing all the finer virtues, but although I love the game to bits I’m afraid that is a gross misrepresentation.
Saracens should be recognised for much more than just creative accountancy
It is currently fashionable to stick the boot into Saracens and while I think it was entirely appropriate that they be fined and docked points for their reckless breach of the salary cap – the original 35 point sanction and £5.4m fine was about right – I would warn against those trying to rewrite history. The accusation is that Saracens simply bought their way to victory and although, like others, they have had their share of big signings, that would be to totally misrepresent the situation.

Dose: Maple Leafs Falling
The Maple Leafs are slumping. They are 2-5 in their last seven after dropping a 6-3 decision to Colorado. Toronto has not played well of late and while they remain second in the Atlantic, a lot of teams are catching up to them in the Eastern Conference. Some good news, in that Frederik Andersen returned from a groin injury as well as the flu, after missing eight games and three weeks.
Déjà vu: Habs' hopes hang on Carey Price once again
For a team trying really hard to avoid using the word "rebuild," it certainly looks like Montreal is doing exactly that after sending captain Max Pacioretty to Vegas and shipping off sometimes centre Alex Galchenyuk to Arizona. However, all-world goalie Carey Price and his eight-year, $84 million US contract, which kicks in this season, remain. At 31 years old, Price is coming off the worst of his 11 NHL seasons (16-26-7, .900 SV%, 3.11 GAA).

NHLers raise money for Craig Cunningham's foundation at charity pro camp in Delta, B.C.
As NHL players ramp up their offseason workouts in preparation for the upcoming season, one pro camp just outside of Vancouver, B.C. is making it a well worthy cause. The inaugural All Heart Pre-Season Pro Camp at Planet Ice in Delta, B.C., kicked off earlier this week with proceeds going towards the Craig Cunningham All Heart Foundation.
Global cycling deserves more than the limited vision of a small town mayor
Dave Brailsford got into mild bother a couple of weeks ago by accusing UCI President David Lappartient of sometimes having the mentality of a small town French Mayor… but there is mounting evidence that the Team Sky boss has a point. Lappartient, painfully mindful of the French press, is now calling for salary caps within cycling teams, a move clearly designed to somehow curb Sky’s dominance. Or at least Sky’s dominance of the Tour de France.
Thomas's Tour de France victory should silence the trolls once and for all
By common consent Geraint Thomas winning the Tour de France is the best thing that has happened to cycling in a long while, a real game-changer that might hopefully cause some to ponder. For too long now cycling – which is manifestly not without its problems – has been hijacked by self-obsessed opinion-makers using the sport as an Aunt Sally and employing gossip, hearsay and incorrect information to vilify certain individuals.
The truth about Wiggins is out there, but why are some not so keen to find it?
THE non-case against Chris Froome regarding salbutamol fell apart so quickly and totally once a few hard facts emerged and a degree of objectivity was brought to bear that cycling probably needs to look afresh at the Sir Bradley Wiggins’ TUEs saga and Dr Richard Freeman’s jiffy bag ‘incident’. The accusers, having already trashed Wiggins’ name for evermore, must now answer some questions to substantiate their claims and plug some rather alarming holes in the case.
Sky face stark choice as Thomas-Froome rivalry creates echoes of 2012
Are there any similarities between the Geraint Thomas/Chris Froome axis in 2018 and the Bradley Wiggins/Froome axis – if that’s what you can call it – of 2012? Both rode one and two at the head of the Tour de France peloton and in a commanding manner that suggested a winning outcome for Team Sky. It was just who took the honours.

Brendan Gallagher chirped Max Domi with a gutless joke involving both players' height
Brendan Gallagher is out of the playoffs, but he’s finding other ways to fill his time in the offseason. … By being an internet troll. Athletes have been partaking in a new challenge on Twitter in which they’re tasked with naming their favourite athletes from a variety of sports. After Arizona Coyotes forward Max Domi listed his in a lengthy tweet, he decided to add a couple categories of his own.

No Blake Wheeler? No Mark Scheifele? No Jacob Trouba, Josh Morrissey, Tobey Enstrom, Dmitry Kulikov, Adam Lowery or, between the pipes, Connor Hellebuyck? No problem … at least not when an NHL powerhouse like the Winnipeg Jets faces a league doormat like the Canadiens.Yes, it was nice for Bell Centre fans that their heroes battled back from a 3-0 deficit.
Stu Cowan: Canadiens’ torch has been completely doused this season
The Canadiens should have brought out their torch for the home opener last Oct. 10 at the Bell Centre. The Canadiens lost 3-1 to the Chicago Blackhawks that night following the most boring home-opening ceremonies since the arena opened in 1996.

Somebody has to deal with Spain's Brussels fiasco and it has to start at the top
I watched most of the Belgium v Spain game live on a REC stream on Sunday and have watched it again since. The referee, Vlad Iordachescu, in my opinion, was absolutely bloody rubbish and seriously impacted on Spain’s ability to even contest the game, but that’s just my opinion. I’ve played in, watched and reported thousands of games of rugby and, along the way, you encounter all sorts of appalling refs. In amateur sport you have to deal with it.
Wiggins and Team Sky: Why there are more questions than answers
To borrow from Johnny Nash there are more questions than answers. Way more. The Bradley Wiggins/Team Sky controversy has thrown up a blizzard of questions and both accused and accusers have plenty of answers hanging in the air. Here’s just some we could do with more information on. 1) Why didn’t Wiggins give evidence at the Parliamentary committee when he was clearly the star witness along with Doctor Richard Freeman?
Henrik Lundqvist is fine with all the shots as long as the Rangers win
On his 36th birthday, Henrik Lundqvist recorded 50 saves in the Rangers 3-1 win over Calgary. It was the second straight game where Lundqvist has had 50 saves and he is the "first goaltender in NHL history (since saves were first tracked in 1955-56) to make 50 or more saves and earn a win in two consecutive games." (NYR Game Notes) With the score tied at 1, Lundqvist dove across the crease to stop a Calgary shot. The Rangers then went down the ice and Pavel Buchnevich scored the game winning goal.
