SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Active weather conditions are forecast for the Sacramento region on Friday, with rain, thunderstorms, and above-the-passes Sierra snow all expected. The primary threat will be the thunderstorms, as some could be severe. Any thunderstorms that form could produce heavy rain, hail the size of quarters to ping pong balls, gusty winds, and even a funnel cloud or brief tornado. This is a typical springtime severe weather setup so it's important to be weather aware on Friday.

El Nino, a weather pattern characterized by warmer sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, is predicted to develop into a "very strong" event this winter. Very strong El Nino events are rare, with only three on record, and historically have brought wetter-than-normal winters to California, although the most recent "super El Nino" in 2015-16 did not result in above-average rainfall.
