Carbon implications of wood harvesting and forest management

There is a long-running debate about whether timber harvesting is carbon neutral. The paper by Peng et al.1 proposes a site-by-site, no-harvest counterfactual method to estimate the net carbon effects of wood harvesting, and finds that emissions from wood harvesting are undercounted by 3.5–4.2 gigatonnes of CO2-equivalent per year (Gt CO2e yr−1).
